NYT: Mormon Politicians From Utah Feel Tea Party Heat
New York Times ^ | March 14, 2011 | Kirk Johnson

Posted on 03/15/2011 2:00:45 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

COALVILLE, Utah — Jacqueline Smith fits no one’s stereotype of a political kingmaker. A home-schooling Mormon mother of five, Ms. Smith lives in a modest ranch-style house here in the mountains outside Salt Lake City with her husband, Cleve, a plumbing contractor.

But in the muscular arena of Tea Party and so-called Sept. 12 groups that have surged into dominance in Utah over the last year, places like Coalville and the Smith house have become unlikely stations for politicians to come kiss the ring.

Senator Orrin G. Hatch, a six-term Republican who faces re-election next year, has been among Ms. Smith’s supplicants, seeking the endorsement of her group, the STAR Forum, for Save The American Republic, and others like it. Ms. Smith is not sold on Mr. Hatch yet, and she does not think too many others in the Tea Party community are either.

…“We oppose all three [Hatch, Romney, Huntsman],” said David Kirkham, a businessman who helped found one of Utah’s first Tea Party groups.

...What amplifies the Tea Party’s role is that Utah, more than perhaps any other state, is dominated by the Republican Party. No Democrat has won statewide office here since a two-term attorney general in the 1990s. That means Tea Party activists do not need to think much, or talk much, about the Democrats, who can largely be dismissed as irrelevant;….

....“People are seriously underestimating Hatch,” said Michael Swenson, a businessman and Tea Party leader in Utah County, a conservative stronghold south of Salt Lake City. Mr. Swenson said he thought that Mr. Hatch’s experience and financial war chest could make for a bitter, divisive fight within the party.

…The traditional links — that a good Mormon is a good conservative — has been broken, many Mormon Tea Party members say…..

…The traditional links — that a good Mormon is a good conservative — has been broken, many Mormon Tea Party members say….. Ya think? Try Harry Reid, also a practicing Mormon. Listen, the Mormon leadership put Harry through school on their dime! Good old Harry, who took money from the trunk of a car that had been “donated” by Joe Conforte, the original owner of the Mustang Ranch whore house outside Reno. Don’t trust the fact that anyone who is a Mormon as a reason to trust them to be a Conservative. Lots of RATs in Utah, Idaho, Nevada and Arizona. Hatch ( along with Lugar) has been in the Senate for 34 years. Time for him to go.

That’s all we need. A President from Utah and three first ladies

Be sure to read the entire piece.

I think the NYT is worried about Utah Tea Party clout (Tea Party clout in general).

Why is it we seldom see the NYT dissecting Tea Party strength in a Democrat stronghold?

I just wish Benjamin Netanyahu would be sitting President until we vote in a new one that’s legit. 2012 is so far away. Look what Obama has done so far.

Heh, heh!

Each FLOTUS with her own wing of the White House.

Anyway, the so called conservatism of Mormoms is belied by their support for illegal immigration.

I’m hardly a RINO romney fan but he’d blow the doors off our current poser and hell, even three morman first ladies would be an improvement over this shelf ass wookie bitch.

The NYT’s snarky article could have been written about any group that doesn’t worship Big government.

I just wish .....

The NYT's wishes to divide and conquer conservatives.

Jokes about multiple wives might be funny but it isn't based on what mainstream Mormans follow.

We need to practice that sort of skewering on the Left, in our assault on the anti-American Left.

I’d vote for a Mormon if that Mormon is conservative, right -wing, Reagan-like and a good candidate. But Mitt is not him.

But Mitt is not him.

And what the Utah Tea Party is saying.

Like Rush said, "I'd vote for Elmer Fudd if the GOP nominated him."

I would too if it were Elmer Fudd who is left standing and the only alternative to Obama. But we're not past the primaries yet. I'm still hoping Yosemite Sam will also jump into the race and others so that Elmer Fudd is not the default candidate.

I liked what they said about huntsman being a socialist. I hope that’s not just lip service and they really mean it.

BS headline worthy of Politico.

Makes it look like Mormons are being attacked by Tea party types when the Tea Party folks cited are Mormons themselves..
