TWO BONEHEAD OBAMA MOVES
boblonsberry.com ^ | 03/10/11 | Bob Lonsberry

Posted on 03/10/2011 8:04:42 AM PST by shortstop

Right now, the Obama Administration is thinking of doing two very stupid things.

Let me rephrase that.

Right now, the Obama Administration is thinking of doing two very stupid things that we know about.

To whit: Tapping into the strategic petroleum reserve and attacking Libya.

Let’s take them in reverse order.

In recent days, it has seemed that the administration and its various deep thinkers have decided that the world will somehow be a better place if the American military knocks off Muomar Khadafi.

Like we need another war.

Like this new batch of Third Worlders will react kindly to American intervention, just like the last two.

Like we’ve got the extra money lying around to take over the airspace of a country the size of Libya.Like we trust Obama to truly fight a war when his natural inclination is to kiss the Gitmo detainees on the lips before he releases them into the wild.

Not no, but h-e-double-toothpicks no.

If the Libyans want to throw off their dictator, let them have at it. It’s their freedom, let them buy it with their blood, not ours. They seem to be doing a pretty good job of it, there’s no need for us to get involved.

And, after the long history of Khadafi’s reign, for us to militarily topple him now, is just stupefying.

This guy has slaughtered unarmed American servicemen, and we didn’t kill him.

This guy spent 20 years as the world’s biggest trainer and funder of terrorists – including the Irish Republican Army – and we didn’t kill him.

This guy blew an airliner full of Americans out of the Scottish sky, and we didn’t kill him.

So, now that we’ve decided this particular group of Muslims shooting guns and shouting “God is good!” is the good guys, we’re going to kill him?

Did we threaten to send planes against the guy in Egypt? Or the guy in Iran? Or the guy in Bahrain or Yemen or Morocco or Tunisia?

How is it that this particular Muslim despot earns the strategic nightcap?

Didn’t he sell us enough oil?

It just makes no sense. Yes, he’s a tyrant. They’re all tyrants over there. It is a despotic part of the world. The only democracy over there is Israel, and the locals want to wipe it off the map.

Further, Khadafi has been a tyrant for 40 years. What is it particularly about right now that has Obama’s panties in a bunch? Why is now the time to take him down?

We’ve got a bellyful of war. It’s time to shut down the wars we have going now, not start a new one. Now, to the strategic petroleum reserve.

This stockpile of about a half a billion barrels of oil sits quietly in empty salt caverns in the Gulf states – the Gulf of Mexico states. It was put there by Americans smarter than we are who figured in the event of war or global disruption it’d be a good idea to have a fallback plan.

Obama wants to sell it.

His folks are running around like that’s their plan.

They say it will bring down the price of gas.

Which is asinine.

Even for the Obama people.

Here’s why. The price of gas is up because of uncertainty about the future. Supply now is ample, but folks worry about future crimps. People are afraid the next Muslim domino is Saudi Arabia. If that happens, the global oil supply gets disrupted and things get ugly.

That’s why gas is expensive.

Obama wants to open up the strategic petroleum reserve, and sell off our emergency supply. That, they argue, will increase supply and reduce cost. That will last for about two months, until we’ve sold all the reserve.

The only problem with that argument is that it’s wrong.

Supply is not the issue, the future is.

Selling the strategic reserve gluts the market today and leaves us with no cushion tomorrow – the exact opposite of what the current situation calls for.

From a price-of-gasoline standpoint, selling the reserve goes full speed in the wrong direction.

But wait, there’s more.

The Obama geniuses say that the money collected from the sale of the strategic petroleum reserve should be put into green-energy research.

So they sell our oil and use the money to fund their pet project.

Never mind the fact that not a single alternative-energy scheme works without a welfare check from Uncle Sam. Electric cars, pretty windmills, solar panels, none of them are practical or profitable unless the government subsidizes it.

But more importantly, perhaps the right thing to do with the money from the strategic petroleum reserve would be to use it to refill the strategic petroleum reserve.

The fact you have emptied your rainy-day fund does not mean there will not be another rainy day.

Not that this truly is a rainy day.

It won’t be a rainy day until we need that reserve to make fuel for the tanks we send to fight the Chinese invasion of our Pacific coast.

So, these are two stupid things the Obama Administration wants to do that we know about.

And they are dooseys.

And they both would weaken our nation economically and militarily.

Which seems to be the main object of the Obama Administration.

Obama’s too busy attacking the Wisconsin State Capital right now, undermining Wisconsin’s sovereignty.

So, he's blown all of our money, now he wants to start eating into our reserves...he really is out to take down this country, and nobody is making a move to stop his ass.

Not to worry. France is taking the lead for the US. They have recognized the Libyan rebel government and will exchange ambassadors. More than likely, they will get involved militarily. The US suffers from a lack of leadership.

However many you could name, the two criticisms here seem way overplayed. Having for the past two weeks spent a lot of time here at the Libya related posts, it seems the main criticisms have been that Obama has been busy playing golf when he should be doing something about this. It appears that his main efforts have been talk, and that he would probably be very happy if the Europeans solve this, especially since they get 10 TIMES as much oil from Libya as we do.

Secondly, the gloom and doom idea that we would be draining the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and thus fall prey to the Chinese landing on our shores is absurd. The only suggestion I have seen here and elsewhere is that he could threaten a small draw down on the petroleum reserve. This would scare the speculators out of the market, and thus gas prices would tend to reflect the true availability of oil which is high. Storage at Cushing, OK is very high and they are building even more capacity. Bush made small draws on the SPR and it has all been replaced.

A far more realistic fear is how wide and deep this type of peoples revolution is going to spread, and who is going to replace the current crop of autocrats, oligarchs, and dictators. Will it be Muslim extremists, or the idealistic interconnected youth who have sparked this ferment? Now, there is a worry!!

Are there any controls on the strategic petroleum reserve. Can Obama drain it at his pleasure or does it take congressional approval?

I think the president should be limited to releasing more than 2% of the reserve without congressional approval.

Using the reserve might make sense right now to knock oil prices down. But it doesn’t make sense to use the reserve, when we are limiting drilling and all other forms of energy.

Here you go a few more ignorant things the Muslim has done..

If any other of our presidents had doubled the
National debt, which had taken more
than two centuries to accumulate, in one year, would
you have approved?

If any other of our presidents had then proposed to
double the debt again within 10
years, would you have approved?

If any other of our presidents had criticized a state law
that he admitted he never even read, would you think that he is just an ignorant hot head?

If any other of our presidents joined the country of Mexico and sued
a state in the United States to force that state to continue to allow illegal
immigration, would you question his patriotism and wonder who’s side he was on?

If any other of our presidents had pronounced the Marine Corps like
Marine Corpse, would you think him an idiot?

If any other of our presidents had put 87,000 workers out of work by
arbitrarily placing a moratorium on offshore oil drilling on companies
that have one of the best safety records of any industry because one foreign
company had an accident, would you have agreed?

If any other of our presidents had used a forged document as the
basis of the moratorium that would render 87000 American workers
unemployed would you support him?

If any other of our presidents had been the first President to need
a teleprompter installed to be able to get through a press conference,
would you have laughed and said this is more proof of how inept he is on his own and is really controlled by smarter men behind the scenes?

If any other of our presidents had spent hundreds of thousands of
dollars to take his First Lady to a play in NYC, would you have approved?

If any other of our presidents had reduced your retirement plan holdings of GM stock by 90% and given the unions a majority stake in GM,
would you have approved?

If any other of our presidents had made a joke at the expense of the
Special Olympics, would you have approved?

If any other of our presidents had given Gordon Brown a set of
Inexpensive and incorrectly formatted DVDs, when Gordon Brown had given him a thoughtful and historically significant gift, would you have approved?

If any other of our presidents had given the Queen of England an
IPod containing videos of his speeches, would you have thought it a proud
moment for America ?

If any other of our presidents had bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia,
would you have approved?

If any other of our presidents had visited Austria and made reference to the nonexistent “Austrian language,” would you have brushed it off as a minor slip?

If any other of our presidents had filled his cabinet and circle of
advisers with people who cannot seem to keep current in their income
taxes, would you have approved?

If any other of our presidents had stated that there were 57 states
In the United States , wouldn’t you have had second thoughts about his
capabilities?

If any other of our presidents would have flown all the way to Denmark to make a five minute speech about how the Olympics would benefit
him walking out his front door in his home town, would you not have
thought he was a self important, conceited, egotistical jerk.

If any other of our presidents had been so Spanish illiterate as to
refer to “Cinco de Cuatro” in front of the Mexican ambassador when it was
the 5th of May (Cinco de Mayo), and continued to flub it when he tried
again, wouldn’t you have winced in embarrassment?

If any other of our presidents had burned 9,000 gallons of jet fuel
to go plant a single tree on Earth Day, would you have concluded he’s a
hypocrite?

If any other of our presidents’ administrations had okayed Air Force
One flying low over millions of people followed by a jet fighter in
Downtown Manhattan causing widespread panic, would you have wondered whether they actually get what happened on 9-11?

If any other of our presidents had failed to send relief aid to flood victims throughout the Midwest with more people killed or made homeless than in New Orleans , would you want it made into a major ongoing political issue with claims of racism and incompetence?

If any other of our presidents had created the position of 32 Czars
who report directly to him, bypassing the House and Senate on much of what is happening in America , would you have ever approved.

If any other of our presidents had ordered the firing of the CEO of
a major corporation, even though he had no constitutional authority to do
so, would you have approved?

So, tell me again, what is it about Obama that makes him so
brilliant and impressive?

Can’t think of anything? Don’t worry. He’s done all this in 24
months — so you have that much time to come up with an answer.

Some further thoughts. Apparently our military is very much against our doing anything robust in Libya. Also, I heard a very disturbing interview with one of 3 BBC journalists who were detained for a day in Tripoli. They were roughed up, kept in a cell spattered with blood where they could hear terrible screams from neighboring rooms. Then they were thrown in a truck with a number of badly beaten and bloody Libyans, some with broken arms and legs. Eventually they were let out, but fear that the others were probably killed.

Releasing oil from the reserve makes even less sense when we don’t have enough refineries to refine it into gasoline. Last time we had to ship it overseas to be refined and then ship it back. We need to build more refineries and drill for more oil. Keep the oil in the reserve until we become self sufficient and then tell the arab world to piss off.

Every single time we have drawn on the SPR oil prices spiked. The reason is that the speculators had an admission that things were so dire that we risked our military reserves for 12 hours worth of oil.

Drawing on the reserve is a tough one. It really is for a real national emergency. And at that estimated to only last about seventy days or so by what I have read.
As some have pointed out in other postings, the military maintains it's own reserves. In either case I don't see where tapping the reserves, only a few percent of it would drive down the price of oil. The only reason GWB tap it after Katrina was that there actually was a real down time for some of the major east coast pipelines to pump crude to the east coast refineries.
On Libya. Lets see what the French and Brits actually suggest. Hell. They don't have a carrier fleet. I believe each of them only have one operational carrier that could participate. This no fly zone would a lot different then what happened in Iraq to protect the northern region only, from Kurds getting hammered by the butcher's air force.
There was no ground war going on. This Libyan deal would require boots on the ground. All forms of air to ground coordination. Who is going to provide those vital tasks.
In Iraq we had our forces on the ground calling in precision air strikes. Two totally different scenarios.
That's my two cents.

I would really like to see a time line chart on that. From what others have reported, the small draw-downs were after a spike to push it back down. And the reserves were replenished afterwards. Also, the big $150 per barrel leap recently was pure speculation and did not reflect the fundamentals.

One of the Fox Business Channel commentators (forget the name) had been an oil trader for 20 years. He showed the charts. It was obvious. He stated flatly that the thing that brings fuel prices down fast is government permission to drill.

I haven’t seen the usurper do anything intelligent or right since his regime came to power, so only “two bonehead moves” is an improvement.

Only two bonehead moves? Broke Owebama is following the map he layed out. He’s shut down gulf drilling and if he can drain the strategic oil reserves that should just about complete his plan of eliminating petroleum energy from the US.
