Dem Proposes Letting People Opt Out of Health Insurance Mandate -- But There's a Catch
By Dan Springer
Published March 04, 2011

Seattle attorney Marianne Meeker doesn't have health insurance and doesn't want the government ordering her to buy it. She pays her doctor with cash. And because Dr. Vern Cherewatenko only takes cash, he can charge a lot less than his peers who deal with Medicare and insurance companies.

"I don't think you can force people to carry insurance," Meeker said. "I don't think that's part of our mindset."

Oregon Rep. Peter DeFazio says he has an answer to these concerns. The Democratic congressman has introduced legislation that would allow people to opt out of the so-called individual mandate -- but exercising that choice would come with some risk.

Anybody who takes the opt-out option would automatically waive his or her right to any government-funded medical help for at least three years.

"It's your choice," DeFazio said. "But remember, there's consequences, and you're not going to pass those costs on to your neighbors, and your community, and other taxpayers and others in the country who are insured."

DeFazio is effectively offering individual mandate critics a strings-attached compromise, but it's unclear whether anybody would want to take it.

How about letting EVERYONE opt out in exchange for swearing never to suckle the public teat?

In exchange you are also exempt from medicaid taxes

Also- social security too. I would opt out right now and they can keep what I have already given them. If I can be exempt from paying FICA (and also get to keep my so-called “employers half”)

What part of UNCONSTITUTIONAL don’t they get?

Oh, I know. The part where the dems get to shove MORE of us under their control.

If the Congress is exempt, we ALL SHOULD BE EXEMPT.

Anything else is unAmerican.

Nothing even remotely Constitutional about this and he knows it.
Its all hot air and for exactly the same reason that Obama was called “Liar!” during his SOTU speech.

The SCOTUS has already ruled that anyone standing foot on any part of America has full legal rights thereof including illegal immigrants & tourists.

Are they then banned for 3 years under this law? LOL

Who are they kidding? Does anyone really think progressives want an entirely separate health care system based on principles of capitalism and the free market to compete with Obamacare?!?

Republicans should be falling all over themselves to call this bluff. This Defazio character may be a true believer, but the real progressives who know the truth would NEVER allow this bill to happen. If you want to talk about ending Obama care, this is it.

This still would not work. EMTLA requires all patients presenting to an ER with an emergency to be treated regardless of ability to pay or citizenship status. If the ER refused a patient, they would face a big lawsuit and lose.
Leftist thinking prevents them of conceiving any negative consequences to their actions.

Can we opt out of ANY taxes needed, and/or associated with it in any shape or form? Not the infrastructure, nor the bureaucrat`s pay checks-hell, not even the damned electric bills at the ObozoCare offices, not a single penny?

But it doesn`t go far enough. You can`t tell me the entire boondoggle of ObozoCare is funded by the mandates? For starters, what about the Porkulus funds allocated to reinforce the IRS? And what about the gold plated benefits packages for the paper pushers for this atrocity? The list goes on, they can`t say this poisonous octopus` tentacles are ALL funded by the mandate! If they let us opt out, then let us opt out of EVERY other cost associated with it, let it sink or swim by the mandates alone, just like a free-market plan would thru it`s premiums. Now that's a head-to-head match up!

The solution is to have everybody who wants it to “OPT-IN”.

Leave the rest of us alone.

I’ll take it!!!

BTW, Wyden has “urged” the PTB in Oregon to opt out, just as Maine did.

I hope they listen to him.

Assuming they would allow doctors to opt out it would still lose to the free market. If you want to deal socialism a serious blow in America, this is it...
