LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Hundreds of Nevada college students and supporters waved signs decrying looming state higher education budget cuts during a peaceful protest on the Las Vegas Strip.
A crowd of more than 500 demonstrators gathered Sunday in front of the fountains of the Bellagio casino resort. They chanted and urged passing motorists to show support by honking vehicle horns.
One sign read "Education Cuts Don't Heal." Another said, "True Life: My College is Broke."
The protesters were escort by Las Vegas police as they marched less than a mile off the Strip to the Palms hotel-casino, where MTV is filming a college spring break special.
Gov. Brian Sandoval's proposals for deep cuts to close a state budget shortfall have Regents Chairman James Dean Leavitt warning of "cataclysmic" changes to Nevada higher education.

How much Porkulus money did the university receive?
USC (SC) is bloated too and needs to be pared down a bit. A good portion of the support jobs could be farmed out. Some divisions have one or two IT people when University Technical Services is supposed to run the entire campus.
Maybe if they stopped letting illegals pay only in-state tuition, they’d have a bit more money.
They are welcome to donating their own money to fill the gap.
Eliminate all the useless majors (womyn’s studies, sociology, etc) and we can then see how short we are of funding.
See this? It’s the world’s smallest violin......
Decry this, maggots!
Stay the hell out of MY pockets!
UNLV - the semi-pro college team that had its own school....back inthe day with Jerry T.
Few, if any credits tranfer out of UNLV, that includes UNR!
University? Bwahahahahahah.... Good one.
Are you saying that UN-LV credits do not transfer to UN-R? That's funny.
I have a colleague at work that graduated with a ChE degree from the University of Nevada (i.e. the one in Reno). He doesn't even acknowledge the Las Vegas 'school'.
That’s sarcasm, right?
Somebody needs to explain to the college students that they need to forget their expectations out of what a liberal system can do for them.
The system is going to run out of money not 50 years from now but more like 10 to 5 years from now.
What a dump. MTV deserves that place.
LOL...ya know it's amusing. I've lived here just over 10 years now and I'd have to say I've only been on the Strip about two times in those years.
Vegas was great in the 80's but now, eh, I could care less.
Nevada is not bad but Clark County sucks!
Unfortunately, Clark County IS Nevada.
No, not really.
Nevada is mostly a conservative State with the exception of the populated counties...i.e. Clark and Washoe.
It's like California with L.A., Frisco and San Diego...same thing.....one bad apple etc..
Ouch...I always preferred “Duke in the Desert” or “Tumbleweed Tech” when referring to my alma mater...
Yep, indeed Ladyvet.
My wife grew up in Las Vegas so we have a family connection there, In fact, if I told you her name you would recognize it immediately as her family owns one of the largest businesses there. My reference was speaking to the centers of population. Nevada has four Congressmen (women). Three of the four are centered in Las Vegas. One other represents Washoe County and the rest of the state. I understand he’s announced for Ensign’s seat. But here in California it’s the same story. All the power is in LA and SF. The rest of the state is RED.
