New Haven To Take Legal Action Against Police Union
NBC Connecticut ^

Posted on 02/19/2011 4:16:44 PM PST by matt04

New Haven Mayor John DeStefano says he will pursue legal action against the police union for the union's Thursday protest outside City Hall.

About 200 officers marched from Police Headquarters to City Hall to protest the mayor's decision to lay off 16 officers as part of a plan to deal with the city's budget crisis. The officers blocked Church Street and demanded to speak to DeStefano about his decision.

A spokesperson for the mayor says the city is aware that many of the officers who participated in the protest were on duty -- something that is not permitted.

Dave Bing in Detroit has faced off with the unions a few times as well. He’s a true democrat but he’s the best Detroit has seen in decades.

Some 50 city bus drivers all called in sick at the same time. (Sound familiar?) Bing Declared that service had been unaffected by the absences and fired them all. He’s currently being sued for refusing to deduct union dues from some city employee paychecks.

Union cops, judges, and prison guards is a dangerous combination.

The officers blocked Church Street

... under color of authority? That's probably against the law.

The commie “unions” are out of control. If we had a REAL Attorney General at the DOJ, we’d be seeing some cool perp walks. Unfortunately, Barry gave us that sorryass Eric Holder.

Fire them.

Use State Troopers and or National guard to cover until new men and women complete the LEO academy

“Union cops, judges, and prison guards is a dangerous combination.”

I recall reading that New York originally had private police companies. The companies would riot and shoot at each other while in uniform.

I’m soliciting alternatives from Freeperland. A friend says there should be no police. I’m not certain how he envisions that working and I’ll have to ask. But I could see just having a county Sherriff. A Sherriff is an elected official. I can see having a few officers and detectives to respond to accidents and murders, based on population. No collective bargaining and no union.

I’d stop all traffic enforcement. I think this is entirely a revenue scheme. Instead take public complaints. Somebody who gets x number of public complaints loses his license, perhaps.

To get down to this point would require an armed society with everyone trained to understand what their rights and responsibilities were to the society at large. For example, it was common through the 1930’s for civilians to join police in chasing down gunmen. There were numerous stories about this in the New York papers. Anybody now who did that would be sued or fired.

The problem I see, and I read this on another post today, is that armed union police in Wisconsin watched as Senators and staffers were assaulted and did nothing to protect them. Just how safe is an elected official when the cop who is supposed to protect him has his own statest agenda?

Anytime you see police asleep in their cars on Sunday, they’re freeloading time-and-a-half pay under union contract. Nothing happens on Sunday. We could send all the cops home, but they usually run full shifts because it boosts the take home pay.

I don’t like the way we pay or incentivize police. I don’t think it’s a good idea to have swat teams that swoop in and take children away with no explanation to their parents; based on an anonymous tip. They only use SWAT teams because they have SWAT teams. Why can’t it be done by just two deputies? Why is it done at all? I spoke with an investigator for what was then called Children and Families and she said, “We know 50-75% of all anonymous complaints are due to bad drug deals or angry lovers taking revenge.” But, they still swoop in and traumatize the children and parents and create a bureaucratic hell to get the kids back?

How do you conservatives see the police and the need for them?

Unions for government workers puts the unions in charge of the government. It's not at all a democratic republic form of government because public elections have no effect on the unions and doesn't matter which party supposedly wins. The unions still run the show. And we all know who runs the unions. So thugocracy is an apt name for our form of government.

Police should be local. As it is now we’re slowly morphing into a national police force which has always been a bad idea. I grew up in a small town with a constable and it worked well because he lived in the community and knew everyone.

Our constable caught me drunk driving and underage. He took me a couple hours walk from my car and dropped me off as well as told my parents.

He made decisions on what was or wasn’t serious enough to be dealt with locally and called the county sheriff in if he thought the situation required it.

The town I live in now defunded our local 5 man police department a couple of years ago do save money. We now paty the county sheriff’s department to cruise through town a couple times a week and its costing us even more than the local department did.

No worker in the US should be held hostage to unions period, compulsory union dues are unconstitutional under the first and 14th amendments, and the unions need to be stripped of their ability to steal money from workers paychecks on a national level.

If the workers love unions so much they will be happy to voluntarily send them dues, there nothing patently illegal about a POTUS issuing an executive order immediately ending withholding of union dues nationwide.

Lets fight it out in the courts, and lets make it a campaign issue, with the promise to end compulsory withholding of union dues one of the first acts of the new GOP Administration.

Its stupid to allow the left(Communists) to use the same mechanism the IRS uses to fund themselves.

The same mayor gave out city “IDs” so that illegals could get services w/o a driver’s license.

He’s a libtard.

Up until about 1850 there were no police in this country, the first police forces were started in NYC. Sheriffs and orgs like the Texas Rangers handled law enforcement.

The City Of New Haven already laid off 16 Police Officers because of the Mayors Wild Out of Control spending Habits.

As far as Officers going through the Police Academy any time soon,That’s very unlikely since they will not be getting bailed out by the State of Connecticut.

Connecticut’s State Government has its own financial troubles looming ahead and a governor who knows of only one way to cure them and thats by raising taxes.
