A Tisbury School crossing guard has been relieved of duty and had his personal firearms confiscated for alleged threats to the Tisbury School overheard by a waitress at Linda Jean’s restaurant in Oak Bluffs. Stephen Nichols, 84, of Tisbury, who said his career with the Tisbury Police spanned six decades and who served in the United States Army during the Korean War, told The Times he made no threats to the school, but had criticized its school resource officer in a conversation with a friend. Prosecutors confirmed Tuesday that five King City police officers, including the former and acting chiefs of police, were arrested early this morning. Chief Assistant District Attorney Terry Spitz said details of the arrests and charges against the officers would be announced at a press conference at 2 p.m. in Salinas. As a result, they sent in an undercover informant on two separate occasions who ultimately hurt them a lot more than he helped. New Haven Mayor John DeStefano says he will pursue legal action against the police union for the union's Thursday protest outside City Hall. About 200 officers marched from Police Headquarters to City Hall to protest the mayor's decision to lay off 16 officers as part of a plan to deal with the city's budget crisis. The officers blocked Church Street and demanded to speak to DeStefano about his decision. A spokesperson for the mayor says the city is aware that many of the officers who participated in the protest were on duty -- something that is not permitted.

This is one of the most disturbing cop videos I've ever seen. Basically a guy was shooting his 22 rifle at a target on secluded acreage in a rural part of San Luis Obispo County, California. The cops got one of those "shots fired" calls surrounded the place with guns drawn and a half dozen officers. To the drug courier, it must have seemed like extraordinarily bad luck: A police cruiser appeared with its lights flashing moments after the 300 grams of heroin allegedly was exchanged on a street in North Philadelphia. The suspect was handcuffed and driven away. But neither luck nor good police work had anything to do with what happened. NEW ORLEANS - A second ex-New Orleans officer charged in an alleged conspiracy to cover up a deadly police shooting of unarmed residents after Hurricane Katrina is expected to plead guilty. A person familiar with the case unsealed Tuesday against former detective Jeffrey Lehrmann said his guilty plea is expected later this week in federal court. The person was not authorized to discuss the plea negotiations and asked not to be identified. Lehrmann faces a charge of misprision of a felony, which means misconduct.
