CPAC 2011: The Straw Poll Aftermath
Slate ^ | 02/12/2011 | David Weigel

The very moment that Ron Paul won the straw poll, I was handed a press release from Young Americans for Freedom: "NATION'S OLDEST CONSERVATIVE/LIBERTARIAN ACTIVIST GROUP EXPELS RON PAUL FROM ADVISORY BOARD." YAF's senior national director Aaron Marks was quoted saying Paul was "clearly off his meds," and that YAF was "more aligned with Obama" than Paul on national security.

I walked outside to celebrating members of Paul's Young Americans for Liberty. They interrupted hugs and high-fives to have a laugh at this.

"Why be this inflammatory?" laughed Jeff Frazee, executive director of YAL. "It's a publicity stunt, but it's nice to see them say they agree with Obama."

What exactly was the straw that broke the camel’s back? It’s not like Ron Paul is any different now than he’s been for years.

CPAC should change their name to KPAC.

They aren’t conservative, they’re kooks.

So I can side with YAF and Obama. Or I can side with Paul, YAL, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, etc. I know which side I’d prefer.

I’ll take Paul, Jefferson, Washington, also....and I have problems with Paul’s dismissal of Islamic Terrorism.

However, Paul, unlike most of the Liberal Globalists that constitute todays GOP....is trying to get America away from the Liberal UN inspired 20th Century “Feel Good Liberal Globalism”

Those who differ with Paul are definitely closer to Obama in their Globalist Outlook.

This straw poll is being way over-analyzed. Mitt won the polls leading up to 2008 and was basically a 3rd place also ran in the primaries. The past two years, the Paul brigade is shipping in their supporters to the event, and that is swinging the straw poll.

I used to go to CPAC, and this is similar to what Gary Bauer used to do. He’d swarm the event with young kids that all had signs and got real loud to try to prop up his non-existent campaign. We are seeing that same technique on steroids with Ron Paul in the last couple years.

Has Ron Paul’s Possee highjacked CPAC the last few years?

Don’t overreact, folks. Winning a straw poll is the closest Ron Paul will ever get to the White House.

“Aftermath”? Please. I said before the straw poll that it was worthless, and the results bear that out.

Does anyone seriously believe that Ron Paul, should he run, would ever get even close to 30% in a single GOP primary?

And if Romney gets the GOP nomination, it won’t be because of the conservative grassroots — it will be because the party insiders and ‘rat crossovers play kingmaker.

I didn’t see any of CPASC but, from what I heard it was a,”leave your Conservative principles at the door” event.

No border control talk...too racist

No abortion talk....too divisive

etc....

Ron Paul has repeatedly disappointed me over the past year (Ground Zero Mosque, DADT), but I am sorry, I would take him any day of the week over Barack Obama.

Ron Paul “wins” the CPAC straw poll - WITH 30%.

Translation - A big majority - 70% - voted for someone - anyone, other than Paul.

How many of that 70% is likely to join the Ron Paul minority by primary election time? Next to none.

So what is the Ron Paul straw poll victory mean - it’s a “victory” of limited and transient value, AT BEST.

It’s a plurality.

Also, if you add in “second choice” balloting: Ron Paul and Gary Johnson combined for well over 50%.
