Will the army let go?
NY Post ^ | February 11, 2011 | Amir Taheri

For three weeks, Egyptians, maybe in the millions, have marched to get rid of their president. Yesterday, they got what they wanted as President Hosni Mubarak announced his resignation.

Cairo was a huge stage for celebrations as people sang, danced, distributed sweets and congratulated each other for the success of "our revolution."

The young Egyptians known as The Facebook Movement set an example for young Muslims everywhere by proving stronger than Mubarak and his military machine, the largest in the Muslim world.

They didn't use car bombs and suicide operations as Khomeinist terror squads had done in Iran in 1979. They didn't burn cinemas and girls' schools or throw acid on women without the hijab. Nor did they imitate al Qaeda by organizing the mass murder of innocent civilians.

Egypt's revolutionary youth, many wearing green wristbands in sympathy for their Iranian counterparts, also steered clear of old political outfits such as the Muslim Brotherhood, with their tired and irrelevant ideologies. Their slogan was not some form of "Allah uber Alles" but "freedom, freedom now!"

They showed that they want to be part of the modern world, not its enemy.

The contours of a political timetable are already in place. A committee to propose amendments to the Constitution is expected to report in April. This would allow for a constitutional referendum in September, with a presidential election to follow next January.

Pretty optimistic timetable I would say.

Meanwhile, the Muslim Brotherhood has already worked out a five year plan and freedom has nothing to do with it. Obama will fund their takeover while the MSM continues to lie about what’s going on. Saudi Arabia, Jordan, etc., are all terrified. Not to mention Israel. Anyone who thinks this will have a happen ending needs to have their head examined.

Yes, they will - one way or the other.

The military “leadership” is a bunch of “old guys”. To crack down they’ll have to get the lower level Military and secret police to get the demonstrations in line. I don’t see the Army doing it.

There will be a vote in Egypt. We need to see the “rights” written into the new constitution. Will it lean Islamist or secular.

I’m betting on a tilt to Sharia and an almost immediate attack on the Coptics followed by a massive flow of religious refugees from the country.

The next question. Where will they go? Who will take them in?

Sooner or later we will discover the hand of Soros behind this “revolution.” The army is all that stands against that. Soros/Obama want the continued degradation of American influence around the world. Obama is upfront, Soros is behind the scenes.

If they don’t get an electoral process under way quick-like, the mob will be tearing up Cairo again very shortly.

I earnestly hope that I’m wrong, but my expectation is that events in Cairo will unfold along much the same lines as they did in St Petersburg, Russia in 1917. When the dust settles, those ebullient, naive young protesters will discover that they have traded a reasonably benign socialist kleptocracy for a bloodthirsty theocratic tyranny.

I agree with you.

Soon we’ll find out if they’re serious or just stroking the agitators.

And the amendments to be imposed will name Islam as the official religion and fundamental source of legislation, and will prohibit laws that contradict the established provisions of Islam. Thanks Scanian.

The army will maintain control so long as there is a threat of control by the wacko radicals.

The army and the business class will not permit Iran. They will come up with something like Iraq. There is arguing and serious disagreement but not reversion to the stone age

I pray to God you are right because my general opinion of the Arabs’ capacity for self-government couldn’t be much lower.

I make my judgement based on the knowledge that there is an unmentioned group or class of Arabs that not only exist but occupy positions of leadership and respect. They are the educated middle and upper class who are bosses and managers. They are well traveled and know the world.

From my vantage they are young....... forty ish

We never hear of these people, but they are there. They are in control or are taking control of businesses (and perhaps the military and government) from fathers or uncles who had a much different world view. This generational change was also seen in the streets. The people of which I speak may have been in the streets as well but when it becomes time to sort it all out, they will take control.

I don’t buy any of the benign nature stories of this “revolution”. The way I see it, the Muslim Brotherhood will hijack the whole thing, and convert Egypt into Iran 2.0. Worse, they are doing it with the support of the Muslim in the White House. And there seems to be a lot of propaganda out there to convince the US public that this is some sort of democratic revolution....coming from our media, which as all know lack credibility, being the lackeys of said Muslim in the White House.

I agree. This whole ‘revolution’ feels like Russia 1917.

There is a chance that this will end well. There is a chance that this will not end in an Islamofacist state with women being slaves and Israel facing a new heavily-armed highly-motivated enemy.

And according to the laws of thermodynamics there is a chance that when you put a pot of water on the fire the water will freeze into a block of ice.

In both cases — Egypt ending well and water freezing over flames — there is a chance. It’s just not bloody likely.

The military will "co-opt" whoever is elected in the general election. The military will have the opportunity to control, the police and the intelligence organization after this little revolution. Whoever is elected will have to dance to their tune or he/she won't be dancing at all.

The economy of Egypt simply isn't strong enough for a true "will of the people" revolution. There isn't enough food and their economy isn't strong enough for a broad "enlightment". The middle class will be bought off with patronage jobs and the like...the poor will still need to be controlled...and no one can control them like the military/police/intelligence organizations.

Without giving it anymore thought than I have, I’m afraid I have to agree with your statement.

“Anyone who thinks this will have a happen ending needs to have their head examined.”

I’m sure many of the people that participated in the “revolution” want to have a life more like the West but ..... well, I hope it goes their way.

I know you meant “happy ending” lol
