From McDonald's burgers in the United States to sugar in Bolivia and chilis in Indonesia, food prices across the globe are soaring.
But consumers and governments should brace themselves for even higher prices, experts warn, as demand in populous emerging economies will put pressure on supplies for years to come.
A "perfect storm" of bad weather, rapid growth in emerging economies -- with people eating more higher-value, resource-intense food -- and low interest rates has sent prices for a broad range of farm and non-farm commodities climbing often at double-digit rates: from wheat to corn, cotton to rubber, and oil to boot.
And while it resembles the sharp spike in food and oil prices of 2007-2008, analysts say the current trend is less speculative in nature and not likely to end with a price collapse, as it did two years ago.
"Things were quite different in 2008... You had price spikes, it was a couple of food grains," said Chris Delgado, an agriculture specialist at the World Bank.
"What is going on now is more broadbased... It's not led by grains."
And it's widespread, and feeding into political worries, not just in the Middle East....

We can buy it with our worthless Obamabucks.
Plant lots of corn!
No need for any problems in the U.S. a President with 2 functioning brain cells would have our food prices wonderfully low with one good Executive Order, as the U.S. does not have a food problem, various other countries do.
Of course if we had a decent Congress and WH, we could turn on the afterburners in terms of everything.
But then again, that’s our crazy right-wing agenda...)
The rise in prices is due to the Fed inflating-period.
The feds now control what you can grow in your backyard, the better to feed - or starve - the people. They didn’t listen to We the people’s demands were simple - stop DeathCare and spending - now they’ll pay the price.
This is NOT North Korea or the Ukraine.
I’ve heard the this is the result of QE2. We are in a nightmare.
A sqaure mile is still 640 acres, and a 1/4 is a 160 acres and when we harvest I hope the food cops aren’t there to stop us! “Stop the tractor, get out, put your hands behind your back, your under arrest you farmer”
That would be happening out in scoped deer rifle country. I would hope that sort of thing would not go on for long.
And the passage of HR2748/S.510/HR3751 FDA takeover of U.S. food production passed by the House and Senate and signed into law by “the Won” who sleeps at 1600 Penn. Ave.
The effect has yet to take place, but it will begin soon and will become quite evident this year.
It was passed in stealth during the end of the “Lame Duck” Session. Originally passed the Senate by a “voice vote”. Returned to the House, read into the shell of HR2751 changing the title and then “repassed” the Senate.
We have been sold out to Global Ag interests, for a buck. We do have the finest Congress that money can buy, and they have sold us out totally.
No press coverage, no discussion, NADA.
Passed on the pretense of anti-terrorist food safety. But will ad in my opinion 50% to the cost of much of the U.S. food supply due to the regulation cost passed on.
How’s life in Georgia? My security system is a 125 year old 4-ten shotgun! Shotgun Charlie
I live on a beach in a fishing village. The fish no nothing about higher prices. They still fill the nets.
They are just happy that I supply ice to keep them cool.
The province I live in is also the vegetable basket for all of Cebu. The farmers could not care less about whats going on in the west and higher prices.
I am surrounded by pigs and chickens. They have no idea about their own value, or what they would be worth in the USSA.
Life is good :)
This is what is frustrating the Fed, Americans are not taking the bait of easy credit.
We’re sort of a pesky group aren’t we? Controlling us is about the equivalent of trying to herd cats.
Sure and those fed printing presses had nothing to do with it. Sure, trying to lower the amount of loss on AIG and fanny and Freddie, by screwing up the whole world. And the value of those millions of over priced homes will decline even faster.
Can bell bottoms and odd-even gas lines be far off?
Another post about us poor idiots who stayed behind in the U.S.
Yes, it sounds somewhat sanctimonious, doesn't it? But, people who don't want to be in the U.S. shouldn't be. We don't really need that.
I live and work overseas, but the U.S. is home and where I'll always return to.
Warts and all, I love my country. :)
They are easing into this becuase if it came down like a ton of bricks we would be at thier door step. Slow and methodical, they’ll get us use to these prices and inch them up in increments as we go along. Same with gas prices
