A longtime friend of Jared Lee Loughner, the suspect in custody following the murder of six people in an apparent assassination attempt on Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, said there was a mysterious, significant change in him a year before the shooting.

"I don't know might have caused him to change, but from the way he was talking to me on Myspace... you can see. It was just questions and questions and random, weird questions that didn't go together," she said. "He wanted to know everything... He would just trip out.
"I don't know why it didn't jump out at me, like, 'Hey, something's wrong."

One Pima Community College student, who had a poetry class with Loughner later in his college career, said he would often act "wildly inappropriate."
"One day [Loughner] started making comments about terrorism and laughing about killing the baby," classmate Don Coorough told ABC News, referring to a discussion about abortions. "The rest of us were looking at him in shock ... I thought this young man was troubled."
Another classmate, Lydian Ali, recalled the incident as well.
"A girl had written a poem about an abortion. It was very emotional and she was teary eyed and he said something about strapping a bomb to the fetus and making a baby bomber," Ali said.

Schizophrenics also try to self-medicate with drugs; it’s an chicken-and-egg situation, but it’s pretty clear that there’s an existing brain chemistry abnormality before the drug use.
Sounds like he would fit right in with the abortion loving zealots over on DU.
It’s a pretty sad state of affairs that the only mention of any recognition by any “adult” that this kid was OBVIOUSLY becoming increasing mentally unstable was from a community college. Did everyone else just shrug his shoulders when he started acting more and more bizarre?

I have a friend of my family who is a paranoid schizophenia as well as bipolar. She started showing signs in her early 20’s like this. She comes from a wealthy family and fortunately her parents afforded all sorts of care for her. But even with all the money they have it didn’t stop her from breaking out of the hospital she was in, stealing money from the hospitals president, hopping on a plane and headed home where she went to her parents country club they belonged too. There she ordered food off a menu the club lounge and called her parents telling them to give her money for a hotel at a 5 star hotel attached to the club. Crazy!!
She also was violent to her parents and would freak out about everything. We all thought she would harm her parents but with medication abd the grace of God she is going better.
This kid Jared was no doubt mentally ill. I have no idea if his parents tried to get him help but if they did sometimes no matter what you do it isn’t enough.
This whole situation is tragic. I hope the guy gets the mental help he needs (if that’s possible), but I don’t think they should let him out, either. This is reminiscent of Hinkley.
I know this guy was 22 but where were his parents?
Remember Amy Bishop? Her mom was part of the local government's "Town Meeting," and had a hand in making personnel decisions for the police department, including the department's senior officers. You can guess her political persuasion, I'm sure.
Amy Bishop had killed her brother Seth with a shotgun some years before she opened fire at a tenure hearing at the University of Alabama. That killing was explained away as "an accident" even though she ran out on the street and threatened passing motorists with the weapon immediately after killing her brother.
Her name is Amy Joanne Loughner, and she is married to Randy Lee Loughner.
Pot can cause mental problems espcially pot laced with bad chemicals or enhanced. The kid had two criminal drug charges by age 22.

He was always an unusual kid but never violent. He was even something of a liberal. But that was before the Tea Party and the toxic political atmosphere of the last two years changed him.
And where are they now?
I have not seen or read a peep about them.
At 22, he is an adult — just what did you want others to do? I thought that involuntary psychiatric committment only applies AFTER violence is perpetrated?
Randy Lee Loughner? So this kid either has a dad, or has taken a stepdad’s name...at first I read, “lives in his mother’s house” so I thought there wasn’t a father involved.
I think the New York Times still has a journalist out looking for a white van bearing right-wing militia members in the Beltway shootings case.
