From Reuters:

"All legislation currently scheduled to be considered by the House of Representatives next week is being postponed so that we can take whatever actions may be necessary in light of today's tragedy," Cantor said in a prepared statement.

The postponement of House business is out of respect for Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and her family.

Conservatives are decent people. What happened today knows no party affiliation or political boundaries. But I don’t expect the Left to be civilized for once.

This is for the country, not for the Democratic Party. Its not for them.

This delay is both unnecessary and melodramatic.

Censure any politician who refuses to retract their statements that the Tea Party or talk radio caused this is the ONLY appropriate action. This is a left wing kook problem and needs to be presented as so.

I don’t understand how postponing the work of the House of Representatives for a week is the proper show of respect to a wounded member.

IMO, extend condolences, don’t let last week’s momentum slip away, continue working to undo rat damage to our country.

Well, we did just watch the local police chief stand in the blood and with his own rhetoric blame talk radio for the murders, offsetting the perp’s record of dead threats and dealings with police.

Next week we’ll have an inquisition of talk radio.

can the FRs develop something for the 9 year old girl’s family whom was shot down by the bastard in Tuscon, AZ. a memorial fund, a scholarship fundin her honor. The family must be suffering enough and in their grief they have to bury their child and be able to go on in life.

I am unable to do anything because I have to travel Sunday, 10 hours stay overnight in Detroit Metro Area undergo cervical vertebrae surgery on Monday AM. i will be unable to be on FR for a time but will check periodically if at all possible if someone has done anything to help the family whom lost their child.

Absolutely stupid on the part of the House leadership. The shooting today by some radical drugged up Leftist insane punk should have no bearing on what has to get done in the House this week. We have a country in one Hell of a mess that needs the full attention, and the full action of the representatives of the people.

Drop the melodrama. Don’t think of this as an excuse to NOT do the will of the people. Cut the crap, and get on with the job at hand.

This is beyond ridiculous. They can take a day to show their respect, it’s called attending the funeral, or give a moment of silence but get back to work. They aren’t related to her!

Every day in this country someone is killed by an illegal alien and nobody shuts down to honor them. The Congress just thinks they are elite. They are not so special and today’s shooting just proved that to them so they are scared!

I was wondering earlier what will happen with Gifford’s seat. Perhaps they are giving the situation a little time to see if or how quickly she might (or might not) be able to resume.

What will be done if she can’t resume her duties? Gubernatorial appointment?

All that said, I’m a little concerned about a whole week wait. Hope it’s not just because the republicans are being ultra cautious of the media.....who is getting ready to have a field day interviewing democrats, I’m sure.

“U.S. House of Representatives Postpones All Legislative Business Next Week.

Why?

The house didn’t suspend business during the Civil War, WW I, WW II, the Korean War or Viet-Nam.

I just cannot believe this. This country is not being run by strong adults.

Yes it is a terrible thing that happened to ONE congressperson.

Are we going to shut down Congress a whole damn week every time something terrible happens to a congressperson?

Good grief. It’s like they were waiting for some excuse. There is NO REASON to shut the Congress down an entire week because ONE congressman gets shot.

this is knee jerk, melodramatic, metrosexual behavior. Real adults that used to run the congress would mention it, have a moment of silence, and then, say that IN HONOR of the congressperson, Congress WILL CONTINUE ON and do the business they need to get done.

Adults deal with problems and move on. They do not cave in and shut down a whole week. This is friggin ridiculous.

The best tribute to this member of Congress is to continue on with the work of the people and to show that a kook cannot shutdown the workings of government for a week. And besides, no one member of Congress is bigger than the institution itself. People might not want to talk about it right now but sooner or later the issue needs to be addressed, what if this member cannot continue on with her duties, will she be replaced by someone chosen by the governor, is a special election held, etc? I could just see a Republican governor selecting a Democrat to serve out the term to show “compassion” (although she sounds like somewhat of a conservative anyway and a Republican would quite possibly be closer to her philosopically). If a President is involved in a situation like this there is a line of succession and these decisions have to be made instantly without too much thought for “appearances” so should it be that much different for a member of Congress? However Republicans handle this they are going to be painted as “heartless” and “opportunists” (unlike Democrats, who we all know would never use something like this for political advantage) so they need to just do what has to be done and not worry about appearances. And don’t kid yourself, even though it’s unspoken (and seen as unseemly) for now, succession is on the minds of a lot of people because it is certainly a possibility that a replacement will be necessary.
