VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. -- Thousands of dead fish are floating in Volusia County Tuesday. They were all in Spruce Creek in Port Orange. The fish kill is unusual, according to people who live along the creek, because it's warm.
It's been a week since there were freezing temperatures, but there are fish lining the banks. Some said it's the worst kill they've ever seen; thousands of fish lined the twists and turns of Spruce Creek.
The sheer number of fish and the smell were both overwhelming.
"It was fun last night trying to sleep with the smell going on," said resident Sunny Morningstar.
Buzzards and pelicans flocked to the site Tuesday and swarmed above the water. They filled trees and private boat docks and waited at the water's edge for an easy meal.
Kayakers on the creek told WFTV, that during their five-hour paddle, they'd seen fish around every bend and it appeared to be one of the most extensive kills they had seen.
Residents told WFTV the fish kill is big enough that it's attracting brown and white pelicans from the beach, which are birds they rarely see this far inland.

It takes a mighty hand to manipulate the sun and not one sparrow falls that HE does not see. Good point, we need to expand our view to see the total picture, not just the birds and fish.

Icefishermen on Lake St. Clair are reporting large schools of these shad which is a common occurance. What is unusual but probably not, is the large numbers of them.
From what I've picked up, they come down from Lake Huron and if there numbers are high that means the water quality is good, their food sources are high and they themselves are an excellent food source for the lake trout, salmon and all the other predator fish.
I remember growing up on Lake Charlevoix in northern Michigan. Every summer there would be a die off of these things, I think they came in from lake Michigan to spawn then die........very stinky time of the year.

Death........every fish that dies has cloudy eyes due to the fast decomposition of the body.
Actually, we’re not being told the whole truth. Something is up and it’s not good. The only truth might be the government doesn’t know what is going on. Compare the two statements:

Monday’s discovery along Louisiana Highway 1 came just three days after more than 3,000 blackbirds fell from the sky in Beebe, Ark. Authorities say examinations showed those birds suffered internal injuries that formed deadly blood clots. They said those birds could have been startled by the shooting of fireworks on New Year’s Eve.

I have a hard time believing all those birds died from BFT and deadly blood clots that caused organ damage? Somebody could be playing around with Lectins.

Your typical migratory species flocking together........Which is all the more reason to suspect they got caught up in a non-typical sudden cold weather storm front...

I don’t think it’s related to the oil spill. This area is on the Atlantic coast, not the gulf. Most of the other major fish kills are pretty far inland, in northern LA and Arkansas.
