DOVER, Del. The body of a military expert who served in three Republican administrations was found dumped in a landfill over the holiday weekend, and investigators said Monday they do not know who might have killed him.
John Wheeler III, 66, was last seen Dec. 28 on an Amtrak train from Washington to Wilmington. His body was found three days later, on New Year's Eve, as a garbage truck emptied its contents at the Cherry Island landfill. His death has been ruled a homicide.

He’s the type of guy I’d imagine managing a landfill maybe, but never IN a landfill.
Endorsement of the year.

John Wheeler III was a US Army captain in the Vietnam War, and led the committee that built the memorial to Vietnam veterans on the National Mall in Wash., D.C.
Wheeler, 66, had served under Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. Bush, and was a special assistant to the Secretary of the Air Force during President George W. Bush’s second term.

To all of my FReeper friends, if you ever hear of me ending up in a landfill, I'm on record here in saying that I'm not that kind of person either.......

Intersting case. Some additional facts regarding this case: last known where-abouts - 3 days before found, he was on Amtrak from DC back home to Delaware. (I am curious to know what he was doing while in DC/who me met with.)
He was having property disputes with neighbor.
He worked under three Republican presidents — Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush. He served as a special assistant to the Air Force secretary from 2005 to 2008.
he also served as head of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund and was the first chairman of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
A staff officer in Vietnam, Wheeler was a graduate of West Point, as well as Harvard Business School and Yale Law School.

As the first chairman of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, Wheeler led the multimillion-dollar fundraising effort to create the memorial on Washington's National Mall.

IMHO he just got jumped. Anyone sophisticated wouldn’t have let his body get discovered this soon, if ever. He probably fought back and was outmanned. Sad.
