Levin pie-chucker charged

An anti-war demonstrator who hurled a pie at the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee in August was charged Thursday in the attack.
Ahlam Mohsen, 23, of Coldwater, Mich., faces a count of assault for hitting Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) in the face with an apple pie, and another count of assault on a federal officer. Her friend Max Kantar of Big Rapids, Mich., was also charged with the same counts.
According to the Associated Press, U.S. Attorney Don Davis in Grand Rapids says elected leaders should be able to listen to constituents without being attacked.
Levin was listening to Kantar's opposition to Levin's foreign policy at a cafe when witnesses said Mohsen snuck up on the senator and smushed a pie in his face, according to reports.
Patrons said that Levin then joked that he preferred blueberry pie, according to the Detriot Free Press.
In a statement aftward, Levin said that Mohsen and Kantar “didn’t hurt me, but they hurt their cause even more than their extreme words already had done.”
Mohsen had previously been arrested at Levin's Lansing state office in January 2009 after staging a sit-in war protest.
She told the Big Rapids Pioneer she hoped "to send a message that liberals and Democrats are just as implicated in the violence (of war) as the Republicans."
