Collins, Lieberman prove formidable team (RINO ALERT)
The Washington Times ^ | 2010-12-21 | Seth McLaughlin

The repeal of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy owes much to Sens. Susan Collins and Joseph I. Lieberman, who kept the issue alive when it appeared dead in the kind of partnership that is likely to become a model for getting things done in next year's divided Congress.

Mr. Lieberman, a Democrat-turned-independent from Connecticut, and Miss Collins, a Republican from Maine, plan to join President Obama at the White House on Wednesday when he signs the bill into law. The signing ceremony caps off a late-season effort that saw the military's ban on openly gay men and women serving in the ranks sink on two attempts as part of the annual defense policy bill, before finally passing as a stand-alone bill in the dying days of the lame-duck session.

Saturday's 65-31 repeal vote came after the two senators, in the span of 10 days, convinced lawmakers that now was the time to scrap the 17-year-old policy and persuaded Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, to carve out floor time for one more try before the clock ran out.

"It wouldn't have happened without them," said Fred Sainz, a vice president at the Human Rights Campaign, a gay-rights group. "They had the courage and tenacity to introduce a stand-alone bill and then expertly managed it to conclusion. They deserve the credit."

Iraq is a horrible situation for Catholics.

But in the West, the Christian community is not being conquered by an outside group. The Christian community is committing suicide.

Coming soon to a church near you, ministers who will face penalties or even jail for preaching the Truth about the sinful nature of homosexuality.

Not even signed into law yet and this repeal ha already begun to weaken our Military.
Many senior offiers are opemnly considering leaving. Some officer are refusing to attend re-education classes and some are refuse to order their units to attend re-education classes.
How long before the first soldier recieves a dishonorable discharge for refusing to shower with an open homosexual?
How long before the first incompetent homosexual soldier is denied a promotion and claims discrimination due to being a homosexual?
These people have begun gthe destruction of the US Military.

“I just don’t understand why this issue was so important to these people. Is it a matter of pursuing the European model?”

I think you got it in the second sentence. The so-called “elitists” want to establish an American aristocracy, where they can sit on their fat butts, produce nothing and rob the treasury. The senate is the perfect place for that. On the other hand, fear the guillotine, you traitorous bustards.

There are too many idiots in Maine for sanity to rein.

These sanctimonious, politically correct a$$holes will never have to suffer the consequences of this horrendous decision!

Just as taxpayers suffer when “government” makes REALLY BAD economic decisions, it is the troops at the point of the spear who will suffer the disastrous consequences of this REALLY, REALLY BAD social engineering experiment.

And, ultimately, when our military is gutted by this PC crowd, the United States of America will pay the price by having a much less capable and effective military.

I served for 28 1/2 years in the Navy and Naval Reserve, and I can tell you, flat out — take it to the bank! that having homosexuals serving openly in the military service will not work!

No matter what the “elite” of the Republican party say, if it was my only other alternative, I would rather have a Democrat in the seat rather than Collins.

Yes — and it already happened in Sweden. A conviction of a pro-traditional marriage pastor went all the way to the highest court before it was overturned.

Unfortunately, very few pastors and ministers in America dare mention the evils of homosexuality. They spend too much time on fluffy talk about how God loves us. Well, yes, that’s very nice of God. But what obligations do WE have to God?

Too much fluffy talk in church and people will drift off to worship God on the golf course or shopping mall. The suicide of Christianity.

Lieberman has spent years cultivating a moderate image, but his constituents know him as a political chameleon. He's reliable on national defense and foreign policy, but on domestic issues, he's on the side his polling or ambition places him: He was for school vouchers and an avowed enemy of Hollywood sleaze as a senator from flinty Connecticut, but as Al Gore's running mate in 2000, he opposed school choice and went to Hollywood, hat in hand, peddling promises.

KEEP THIS LYNG PRO-ABORT FANATIC OUT OF THE REPUB PARTY Lieberman cannot be trusted. During Clinton’s impeachment, this so-called "conscience of the Senate" went on and on condemning Clinton's behavior, but when the crucial vote came, he stood by Clinton. Lieberman is always plotting to get something for himself. He sucked up to McCain at the same time he wrote a huge check to Dems to keep his Dem bona fides.

=========================================

HERE'S HOW LIBERMAN LIED HIMSELF INTO OFFICE Lieberman is a staunch supporter of abortion rights, and even voted against banning partial-birth abortion six times in a row.

But pro-life leaders in Connecticut remember another Joe Lieberman. Lieberman made pro-life pledges about 20 years ago, when he was first a candidate for the US Senate. Lieberman sought pro-life votes in the final stretch of his 1988 Democratic bid to oust 18-year Sen. Lowell Weicker, a pro-abort Republican.

"Joe was very liberal, like Weicker, but we had a poll on abortion that showed which way the wind was blowing," says Daniel Cosgrove, then the Democratic town chairman in Branford, Mr. Lieberman's hometown. The poll showed anti-abortion sentiment outweighed pro-choice views in urban areas throughout Connecticut. "In the Waterbury area, it was more than any, 12,000 [more] against abortion," Mr. Cosgrove says.

Lieberman "expressed himself as coming from a tradition in support of life, not in favor of abortion on demand." "Lieberman expressed himself against abortion, all suicide, and euthanasia. His position on that definitely was well received by the Catholic hierarchy.

State Sen. Regina Smith, who conducted the pro-life poll for the archdiocese, arranged for Lieberman, then the state AG, to meet with Catholic prelates before the election to lay out his support for Catholic pro-life positions.

The strategy worked. Lieberman convinced the archbishop he favored pro-life positions and would vote differently than Mr. Weicker, thus winning Catholic support that pushed him to a narrow 10,000-vote victory — the only Democratic Senate upset of that year. Lieberman's winning margin was less than 1 percent of 1.4 million votes.

Written records of a meeting between Lieberman and top officials of the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) two months after the 1988 election quote Mr. Lieberman as saying he "thinks there are too many abortions," and promising he would not "apply a litmus test" against pro-life judicial nominees.

Liar Lieberman today, of course, denies any of this ever happened.

An Orthodox Jew, Lieberman defends his pro-abortion, pro-infanticide record, saying Jewish law is deeply divided and Orthodox Jewry construes abortion as "a personal matter."
