Departing Republican-turned-Democratic Sen. Arlen Specter on Tuesday said conservative Republicans who backed Tea Party challengers against establishment candidates in the recent elections engaged in political cannibalism.
In his final floor speech, Specter complained there's scant room for centrists like himself in a polarized Senate where civility is in short supply.
"In some quarters, compromise has become a dirty word," said Pennsylvania's longest-serving senator, who lost his re-election bid after three decades in the Senate.
Specter complained that some GOP senators had helped Tea Party challengers beat incumbent Republicans like Utah Sen. Bob Bennett and Rep. Mike Castle in his Delaware Senate primary.
"Eating or defeating your own is a form of sophisticated cannibalism," he said.

Compromise? Try caving in to the liberals. You can't "compromise" with people trying to destroy the country.

You're a RAT Senator so it's not cannibalism, it's getting rid of a disgusting nuisance.
I'm one of the proud Utahns that helped run Bennett. Specter doesn't have the nuts to complain about the people and express his full contempt for the people, so he's just going to talk nebulously about the Tea Party and "some GOP senators".
Funny how such a brazen skunk who's screwed the people to their faces for the last 30 years is leaving with his head down, rambling vaguely about grassroots movements (the Tea Party is one of the very very very few, unlike the DemonRat "grassroots" movements that are funded directly by the DNC and run by one of its favored cronies). Specter's future is go home, go on a long bender, and lament about how his ironclad scam came apart so quickly at the end.

A centrist? Maybe at one time he could have been called a "centrist", but those days are long gone. A centrist does not vote for a government takeover of healthcare (that he once strongly opposed), vote for massive spending bills that alone add nearly $1 trillion to the debt on junk projects (porkulus bill), etc.
