Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said Saturday that the failed Democratic effort to pass the DREAM Act in the lame duck session dealt a blow to future talks on a wider immigration bill.
It was an exercise to try and taint Republicans with Hispanic voters, knowing that the DREAM Act under these circumstances could never pass, Graham told reporters in the Capitol after the bill sputtered on the floor.
What they have done on the DREAM Act is hurt overall comprehensive immigration reform, he said.
The DREAM Act, which would give legal status to illegal immigrants who came to the country at a young age, lived here for at least five years, graduated from high school and attended college or served in the military, fell five votes short of the 60 needed to overcome a GOP-led filibuster 55 to 41.
Graham has worked with Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) in the past to try and seek a Capitol Hill compromise on a wider reform plan -- one that would blend increased enforcement and border security with a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, among other measures.
He said the DREAM Act effort will make it harder to bridge divides on immigration, noting the impassioned advocacy on both sides of the issue.
Our base is all riled up that this is amnesty, so you have taken a debate on immigration, one part of it, you have gotten people emotional before you can sit down and reason your way through a comprehensive bill, Graham said. Doing this vote the way they did it has hurt the ability to do comprehensive reform next year to some extent.
Nothing could be truer. But Graham has his own code, as well.
Our base is all riled up that this is amnesty...
Which is code for "Our bigoted base is too stupid to recognize that it's not amnesty...really...only kinda amnesty...in some cases...and we've got to trick 'em into thinking it's something else."
Turd.
Pretty well covers it.
What the HELL happened to LG? He was a champion during impeachment! Who got to him and how?
Although I don’t like the idea of spending TARP money, I’d be in favor of spending some of it and buying out the neighbors of Lindsey Graham and all other amnesty backers and filling up their entire neighborhoods with illegals.
Additionally, since -- for whatever God-blessed (and I mean that literally) reason -- the Democrats forgot to put Severability in the bill -- if one part is Unconstitutional, the whole thing falls.
It's the error of a rank amateur lawmaker, and they did it.
I praise the ghost of Democrat bungling and arrogance.
I have observed over and over, within the last year, that the only thing that saved us from 1933-Germany Tyranny was Obama's pure incompetence and laziness, and the twin arrogance of Pelosi and Reid.
We got lucky.
This time.
Remember Harry Reid said he was floating 4 DREAM ACT versions of the bill...today was just 1 version...there are 3 more out there...buried in God only knows.. STAY ALERT FOLKS!..it ain’t over until the last 1 leaves town...........
The only ‘reform’ most of us want to see on immigration is for the illegals to be put back south of the border & kept there. A serious fence built & manned appropriately.
Reform their ability to attend school.
Reform their ability to get welfare , Food Stamps, free school lunches & other social benefits.
Reform their ability to get any kind of health care-—even the kind that is common in Oakland every night of the week.
THAT is the beginning of reform, IMO.
More living breathing Constitution mumbojumbo again.
It's getting to look like taking drugs is a requirement of entering the Washington Beltway as a politician.
The veteran politicians get the best cut.
Every dark cloud has a silver lining.
After the way the vote went on DADT today he will probably look into resigning the Senate and rejoining the Air Force.
2011? Hopefully the new Republican House of Representatives will have nothing to do with any amnesty schemes, and these Senate amnesty pushers can sit and fume and fuss for at least the next two years.
Eager to get a read on just how the new House will view this issue.
“Isnt there some way the Republicans can come up with a real conservative to run against Graham?”
Hang tight. Graham has already been censured by several county republican organizations, he’s the butt of jokes on talk radio and he can’t travel the state with a platoon-size Pretorian Guard.
He’s persona non grata in South Carolina. The line-up to run against Graham will be filled with impressive conservatives known in the state. He’ll be gone in 2014.
“...and he cant travel the state with a platoon-size Pretorian Guard.”
and he cant travel the state WITHOUT a platoon-size Pretorian Guard.
Stupido!
Well, the good news is that we won’t have to worry any more about Senator Lisa Murkowski being a RINO. For the next six years, she’ll be stabbing us in the front, rather than in the back.
Between him, Snowe, Collins, Murkowski, and a couple of others, the Rats have effectively 63 votes.
“He said the DREAM Act effort will make it harder to bridge divides on immigration, noting the impassioned advocacy on both sides of the issue.”
As far as I am concerned that divide will never be bridged. McCain and Graham area lower forms of life. Career, corrupt, self-serving parasites.
Republicans under George W. Bush betrayed the American people by attempting to force amnesty for millions of illegal aliens on the people. McCain had Juan Hernandez working on his presidential campaign. Hernandez was a member of the government of Vincente Fox Hernandez encourages all Mexicans who have become American citizens to retain dual citizenship and vote here and in Mexico.
I called McCain HQ and asked a young woman staffer whether Hernandez was working on the McCain campaign. The brain dead little idiot informed me that she was tired of people calling and asking that question.
She indignantly said that Hernandez was not a PAID member of the staff. She went on to say that they would take help anywhere they could get it. This is the caliber of people who are involved in politics in today’s America. I guess she is a product of the public schools.
All I can say is from your lips to God's ear. I pray the people of SC do NOT have short memories as he's capable of pulling the wool over their eyes should anything of a military crisis arise. He's outstanding in his support of our armed forces and people may forget the RINO behind the curtain.
If we make sure that illegals are not hired they will self deport.
There are millions of Americans in need of jobs that are going to illegals.
Hopefully they’ll leave now and take their kids with them.
Graham is a pissant
