Graham: DREAM Act push damaged wider immigration reform effort (RINO planned amnesty push in 2011)
The Hill, Washington, DC ^ | 2010-12-18 | Ben Geman

Posted on 12/18/2010 2:57:27 PM PST by rabscuttle385

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said Saturday that the failed Democratic effort to pass the DREAM Act in the lame duck session dealt a blow to future talks on a wider immigration bill.

“It was an exercise to try and taint Republicans with Hispanic voters, knowing that the DREAM Act under these circumstances could never pass,” Graham told reporters in the Capitol after the bill sputtered on the floor.

“What they have done on the DREAM Act is hurt overall comprehensive immigration reform,” he said.

The DREAM Act, which would give legal status to illegal immigrants who came to the country at a young age, lived here for at least five years, graduated from high school and attended college or served in the military, fell five votes short of the 60 needed to overcome a GOP-led filibuster — 55 to 41.

Graham has worked with Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) in the past to try and seek a Capitol Hill compromise on a wider reform plan -- one that would blend increased enforcement and border security with a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, among other measures.

He said the DREAM Act effort will make it harder to bridge divides on immigration, noting the impassioned advocacy on both sides of the issue.

“Our base is all riled up that this is amnesty, so you have taken a debate on immigration, one part of it, you have gotten people emotional before you can sit down and reason your way through a comprehensive bill,” Graham said. “Doing this vote the way they did it has hurt the ability to do comprehensive reform next year to some extent.”

This guy Graham has really got to be hooked out of the Senate next time he comes up for election, which unfortunately isn’t for some time. In the meantime, we need to pressure the leadership to get some sort of control over him. What a loser.

His idea and our idea of immigration reform are two different things.
1. enforce our employment laws
2. finish the fence and close the physical border with additional BP and troops if necessary.
3. Zero tolerance for any illegal immigrant who breaks the law..locked up until deported.
4. End sanctuary cities
5. No more automatic citizenship for illegal immigrants children born here.
6. End family chain migration. New immigrants selected by qoutas and qualifications.
7. Foreigners entering the US issued biometric card and post a bond that guarantees they leave on time.
8. No education, welfare, medical care for illegals.
9. Banks forbidden from giving credit or mortgages to illegals residing in the US.
Now that is immigration reform..

And even then, we have to look out for these RINOs. Isn’t there some way the Republicans can come up with a real conservative to run against Graham?

Not one of these scumbag politicians has ever explained WHY we need “comprehensive immigration reform”. ‘RAT voter registrations are on the rise so what’s the problem?

comprehensive immigration reform...

...never means really control the border. Doing that is always dismissed by advocates of "CIR" as impossible.

Lindsey Graham has long been a Democrat-Lite traitor to conservative Republican principles. However, Senator light-in-the-loafers showed his hand with this comment about the chances for ‘comprehensive immigration reform’ (translation: amnesty) “next year” being hurt by the failed DREAM act, which roused Americans to recognize it as amnesty by another name - which Graham tactically admits - and reject it (via their senator’s votes). This is a battle won but a fight that is far from over as long as we have liberal Democrat politicians in congress and feckless, fake Republicans such as Lindsey Graham and John McCain (among others) pushing amnesty bills for illegal aliens. I hope the 112th congress doesn’t disappoint but - like many Freepers - I’ll believe it when I see it.

In contrast, Mark Krikorian has some thoughts on going on the offensive re: illegal immigration next year:

I may be a radical, but I think I’d require all current employees to be churne through e-verify as a one-time thing while also applying it to future new hires.

I wish Lindsay would get caught trying to hit on little boys, get drummed out of the senate, and then have Nikki Haley appoint his replacement.

It would really “queer” the shamnesty proclivity among RINOs.

one that would blend increased enforcement and border security with a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants Enforce the existing laws dummy

Typical Graham RINO "Alice in Wonderland" approach gets it exactly ass backwards.

As in Citizenship first Enforcement Second.

I am extremely grateful that Democrats got their priorities mixed up after they gained strong control of government. Democrats should have made immigration reform their top priority because immigration reform (with amnesty) would have assured Democrat control of government after the amnesty recipients became eligible to vote. Democrats would have needed some compromises regarding border security and enforcement of immigration laws but they could have passed a bill with a major amnesty component possibly with some restrictions on welfare and family reunification. Democrats only needed 1 or 2 Republican votes so the compromises would not have been major.

Instead Democrats wasted enormous time on energy and health care. The health care bill has been a bitter success as the public became disgusted with the lack of compromise and the underhanded manner in which the bill passed. Courts may overturn part of Obamacare. In addition, the Republican House may refuse to fund parts of Obamacare. The health care bill cost Democrats control of the House with uncertain future for the health care bill.

I praise the ghost of Democrat bungling and arrogance. Only bungling and arrogance could have stopped permanent Democrat control of government.
