China claimed that "the vast majority of the international community" would not attend the ceremony, a claim that was swiftly contradicted by the Nobel Institute in Oslo who said that 44 embassies had accepted invitations to Oslo City Hall.
"You only have to look at the figures. The vast majority of countries invited will be represented," said Geir Lundestad, the director of the Nobel Institute.
This year's Nobel peace prize has become one of the most politicised in living memory since it was announced in October, with China issuing warning letters to European diplomats not to attend or face economic consequences.
