18 Countries refuse Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony invitation For Chinese Dissident
The Telegraph ^ | 12/07/2010 | Peter Foster

The refusals, which included several key Chinese allies and trading partners such as Pakistan and Sudan, came after weeks of intense lobbying by China to stop countries showing support for Mr Liu, a Chinese pro-democracy activist serving an 11-year jail sentence.

The refusals have sparked acrimonious exchanges between Beijing and Oslo and highlighted growing international fault-lines between an authoritarian rising China and the liberal democracies of America, Europe and its historical allies.

"I would like to say to those at the Nobel committee, they are orchestrating an anti-China farce by themselves," said a Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman. "We are not changing because of interference by a few clowns and we will not change our path."

China claimed that "the vast majority of the international community" would not attend the ceremony, a claim that was swiftly contradicted by the Nobel Institute in Oslo who said that 44 embassies had accepted invitations to Oslo City Hall.

"You only have to look at the figures. The vast majority of countries invited will be represented," said Geir Lundestad, the director of the Nobel Institute.

This year's Nobel peace prize has become one of the most politicised in living memory since it was announced in October, with China issuing warning letters to European diplomats not to attend or face economic consequences.

As a Christian who wishes all men well. My thoughts go to my fellow Chinese Christians tormented by the same weakings in Peking.
The leadership furiously attack Christ knowing that they will not long survive those who follow him.
