More than 500 suspected Taliban fighters detained by U.S. forces have been released from custody at the urging of Afghan government officials, angering both American troops and some Afghans who oppose the policy on the grounds that many of those released return to the battlefield to kill NATO soldiers and Afghan civilians.

I would be less inclined to take prisoners in this scenario. Some of these prisoners were taken at great risk to our troops, when they could easily have been dispatched. Maybe the logical course of action in this situation will result in a change of the ROE.

You know, after Viet Nam, Military leaders swore never to fight wars with our hands tied behind our backs, or with political filters on tactics. Yet, here we are, doing the exact same thing in every war we've fought since. I guess that the only war you can fight for true victory is one in which the other side is out to annhilate you, and it is either us or them.
