The rally's off: Interesting development on the Brian Aitken front

Frank Fiamingo of the New Jersey Second Amendment Society just called to let me know that this Sunday's planned rally to support Brian Aitken has been called off.

Just why remains an open question. As you can see from the above video, Aitken wasn't shy in objecting to the highly questionable decision by an overzealous prosecutor to go after him for having guns for which he had a permit in his car truck. See my column here on that topic. Perhaps this represents some sort of positive development in the case. Perhaps the authorities have recognized the folly of keeping this guy imprisoned for years on a violation that would not have been a violation at all in a saner state. We shall see.

See the e-mail from Aitken below.

Subject: URGENT: From Brian

Dear Frank,

This is Brian speaking. I don't think anyone wants this rally to happen more than I do but I have to pull my support from it. In doing so I will ask my lawyer Evan Nappen not to make any comments or to attend. My family will not be attending, and we are asking Dennis to honor our request as well. I understand your intentions are good but as the old proverb goes the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and this could do more harm than good for me. While I sympathize the need for legal reform I can't build a soapbox with my name on it from people whom I do not know to preach their views which I am not aware of, and may not sanction. We are canceling the order for bumper stickers, t shirts and signage for the event. I wish the best for you and your organization.

It is strange. I figure Brian is trying to protect his stupid Mother. She got the ball rolling on all of this.

I was pretty shocked when Frank posted this yesterday.

Frank is a stand-up guy so I don’t know where this agenda and commercial aspect comes in. Seems to be a slap in the face to me but Frank has been tight-lipped about the whole thing.

Maybe there’s a deal in the works, maybe not. The laws stink but after reading that letter yesterday, my interest in this particular case dropped to zero although. I’ll still help NJ2AS, ANJRPC and anyone else who wants to get these asinine, unconstitutional laws repealed but I’m done caring here.

If this was just prior to an election it would makes but I can’t get any logic from this.

I just checked his facebook page ( Free Brian Aitken ) and couldn't find a detailed explanation. Perhaps some deal is in the works and this might be a distraction if too many other groups with their own agenda get involved.

I strongly feel that Brian will win on appeal, and he will eventually be a free man. The focus right now is getting him out of jail so he can spend Christmas with his family.
