ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Don Meredith, one of the most recognizable figures of the early Dallas Cowboys and an original member of ABC's "Monday Night Football" broadcast team, died Sunday. He was 72. Meredith's wife, Susan, told The Associated Press on Monday her husband died in Santa Fe after suffering a brain hemorrhage and lapsing into a coma. She and her daughter were at Meredith's side when he died.
"He was the best there was," she said, describing him as kind, warm and funny. "We lost a good one."
She said a private graveside service was being planned and that family members were traveling to Santa Fe.

Sad to realize time is marching on... loved ole Dandy Don. God grant him peace.
.. Ping!
Turn out the lights.
Gentle peace, Don. You were the best.
Turn out the lights...
The best Monday Night football lineup without a doubt was Cosell, Gifford and Dandy Don. You could tell that Dandy Don did not like Cosell. Everyone would know the game was over when ole Dandy Don would sing “Turn out the lights, the party’s over. They say that all, good things must end...”
These type of characters in the announcement booth are few and far between. He’ll be missed. Prayers for his family...
I loved Dandy Don on Monday Night Football; he was perfect at deflating the ignorant blowhard Howard Cosell. On a Monday night after a Korean boxer was killed in a boxing match, the home team came up short on a 3rd down within field goal range; the team promptly sent out the placekicker while the fans were screaming for the team to go for it. Cosell launched into a diatribe about “bloodthirsty fans” and all they want is “blood blood blood” and “that’s what leads to dead boxers in the ring.”
At the end of the rant Don just said: “Oh come on Howard; we’re just talking about a first down.”
way way way too young. 72 years old is middle age now adays. Seriously, prayers to his family.
Fare thee well, Dandy Don.
72. Young.
Last night while watching Dale Hansen sports on channel 8 in Dallas, the guest was Walt Garrison (as part of the 50th Anniversary of the Cowboys). When Dale asked Walt to name the best QB during his tenure with the Cowboys from 1966-1974 (including Meredith, Morton and Staubach), he cited Meredith because Dandy Don called all of his own plays.
It was inevitable Turn Out The Lights comments would be offered up but they don’t do full justice to the man. Like most TV personalities Meredith was much more than a 2-dimensional court jester.
Obviously there was his playing career in which he rightly took pride (he was fictionalized in North Dallas Forty).
Meredith and his wife were the parents of a daughter with severe birth defects and they agonized over their decision to place her in a care home.
‘Monday Night Mayhem’ is a fascinating and revealing look at all of the MNF characters both on and off-camera.
They say people die in 3’s. Looks like Gifford is next. And being married to Kathy Lee, he’s probably counting the days.
As Dan said Garrison was always good for 5 yards.
Aw gee, he was a great guy. RIP
I always enjoyed his quick wit on MNF.
Particularly that game from the Astrodome where a fan
in the stands flipped the bird to their camera. “We’re
#1” was Meredith’s rapid response. Rest in Peace.
RIP Dandy Don...
Good time Charley’s got the blues.
Farewell Dandy Don, and don’t Y’all hate Cosell too much. That team was pure entertainment.
This is so sad. He was a class act and definitely one of the good guys. RIP in Mr. Meredith
Lol. Classic.
