Allen West, a 22-year Army veteran, is preparing for Washington a bit like he would for a battlefield. His "high and tight" hairstyle will be one of the only buzz cuts in Congress. He plans to carry a camouflage bag, not a briefcase. And on a recent morning, while others in the Republican Party's large incoming freshman class jockeyed for office space, he declared himself largely indifferent.
"I've lived in tents," said West, who in January will become the first black Republican to represent Florida since 1876.
Since its last black lawmaker retired from the House in 2003, the GOP has been eager to elect high-profile African Americans. The party's desire to demonstrate inclusiveness has been especially pressing since the election of Barack Obama and the rise of the predominantly white tea party movement.

He stands for all that is right! Just the opposite of Obama. Here's a man I would vote for !
“West responded by saying he is “even more focused that this liberal, progressive, socialist agenda, this left-wing, vile, vicious, despicable machine that’s out there is soundly brought to its knees.”
(nuff said)
West will be interesting to watch. I would be particularly interested to watch/hear any exchange between he and Pelosi.
I think Im in love!!!
We need more like him. Black, brown, or white !!!
I’m swooning — that’s a man!
I can’t wait until he shows up at a CBC meeting. He will not be invited to be sure! But he said he would join. He will be the CBC’s worst nightmare!
So we had a black Republican in 1875?
I suspect Mr. West from the House and Mr. DeMint from the Senate could become best friends.
Allen West BUMP!
I like him already!
I LOVE it!!!! I know exactly where he is coming from. After some of the places I have had to put my head too sleep, who cares! Except I will no longer go camping unless there is at least a Days Inn nearby!!! :-) No more sleeping on cold frozen wet muddy ground for this senior citizen!!! :-)
Where's the racism? It's not there because conservatives don't care about skin color. I wonder if any white challengers won in districts that were 83 percent black.
“incoming freshman class jockeyed for office space, he declared himself largely indifferent. “I’ve lived in tents,”
Shades of Utah Senator Jake Garn, for anyone who remembers.
The US House was full of black republicans after the civil war. Until the Democrats (and their armed terrorist wing the KKK) started harrassing them and intimidating the others against voting for them.
Krissaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh must have choked having to write this article about a TRUE AMERICAN.
She must have hated every second of it.
Afterwards, she rushed home for a bubble bath with red wine and a copy of Mein Kampf, or the Communist Manifesto... or Time Magazine.
How come the media never refer to the "predominantly white environmental movement" or the "predominantly white pro-choice movement"?
This guy is awesome.
I am totally against affirmative action, quotas and racial politics, because I know that has already led to the balkanization of America.
But I don’t understand why the GOP doesn’t actively recruit more black military men for the party.
Imagine if Congress had a black caucus made up of people like Allen West instead of people Maxine Waters and Charlie Rangel.
They would biatch slap all these corrupt Commies into next week.
He stands for all that is right! Just the opposite of Obama. Here’s a man I would vote for !
Double dittos! Finally someone who cares about us little people.
“The party’s desire to demonstrate inclusiveness has been especially pressing since the election of Barack Obama and the rise of the predominantly white tea party movement”.
...uhhh, no a-holes! The Post has got to stop reading revisionist history. Most of our black conservatives didn’t make it due to injuries caused by the left hurling Oreo cookies at them.
The South had a lot of black Republicans during Reconstruction.
