Maps from 1942 of the never-was Nazi invasion of North America

These diagrams from the March 2, 1942 issue of Life detailed the Nazi invasion of America shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Check out such alternate reality battles like the bombing of Detroit and invasion of Norfolk, Virginia.

These maps were created as a follow-up to an article about an American defeat in WWII by pioneering science fiction author Philip Wylie, who wrote the proto-superhero novel Gladiator. These maps were made in the early days of US involvement in World War II, so there was a sense that this invasion was a real possibility. You can read more about these maps at Ptak Science Books.

From what I can tell, looks like they succeeded in the bombing of Detroit.

Hitler wanted to bomb New York City as a priority. Goring commissioned the Reichsluftfahrtministerium, the Nazi Germany Air Ministry, to obtain a long-range strategic bomber for the Luftwaffe that would be capable of striking the continental United States from Germany.

Rumor has it that there is an exact replica of the Horten H.XVIII long range bomber in a hangar in Palmdale,CA. A group of engineers built the plane.

Awesome!

From the perspective of hindsight, such maps border on the paranoid. The chances of Germany effectively launching an invasion of the States at the time was practically nil; they couldn’t even manage to get pesky little Britain under control. The best they could have realistically hoped for was that they could hold on to Continental Europe, leading to a long stalemate - and that was even doubtful.

The Germans never paid serious attention to the requirements of amphibious warfare. There is no way they could have produced enough ships to make a serious attempt at invasion. Not unless they conquered England first and had a few years to build a fleet.

You are correct.

Hitler wanted an Amerika bomber as early as 1938.

Let us not deceive ourselves and deny that history is repeating itself as we speak. China, Russia & the moron led Venezuela have the same fantasy. Let us pray that God is always on our side.

You got me laughing at that response (and you're correct)! I learned to drive in Detroit; it's hardly recognizable anymore.

Hitler wanted to bomb New York City as a priority.

And such a bomber was actually developed -- the Me 264

Three copies of the Amerika bomber were actually built by Messerschmitt. And, in fact, one of them successfully transited the Atlantic undetected. It flew non-stop from its base in the Bordeaux area to Montauk Point on Long Island and returned.

Though it bears a strong resemblance to the B-29, it actually pre-dated the Boeing design.

It was built to test the stealth characteristics.

I cannot help noticing the “5th column” all over those maps. I guess Hollywood and the media were already worked into the Nazi/Jap war plans.

What’s the reference to the “fifth column” coming from the midwest area of the USA? Did the Germans have active recruitment in Michigan/Illinois/Indiana areas?

I like that plan they had to land in Ecuador. The coast of Ecuador is about as enjoyable as a turd in in a sauna. Those krauts would have loved it. Should have let them invade up to Mexico, god knows they could use a little organization down there. Those Germans would have done wonders for Mexico, and we could vacation down there without worrying about getting killed.

Yes, then they get here and face an armed populace with more guns than all of Europe had... and factories to build more.. and more.. and more... everything! Planes, trucks, ships, tanks. If the Germans thought Russia was a slog... wait till they crossed the Atlantic, and then had to fight a rabid population fighting from all buildings, hills, trees, etc. They thought they had a good U-Boat navy, they probably did not have the updates on what we did to Japan yet.

All the Germans would need to look back on was what we did to a superior force.. TWICE in history before them. Roosevelt probably never seriously minded the thought of invasion at all. Heck it would have just given us an excuse to annex most of Canada anyway.

I disagree. The key error made by Hitler and his generals was to attack the USSR before securing England and possibly Iceland. If the nutbar had been able to subdue the Brits, all bets were off!

From what I’ve read, Hitler really had no understanding at all about how America worked. He was a sadistic murderer and evil, but he was brilliant in reading how other European countries would react to his moves, at the same time he was 100% wrong on America, as were his henchmen. Churchill might have been the only Euro that understood anything about the USA, and that knowledge saved his bacon.

I read that when Hitler was in his bunker and heard that Roosevelt had died, he and his posse were genuinely encouraged that this somehow would be a reprieve for the Germans. They thought the death of an American president is similar to the death of a European monarch, or a third world dictator. They were clueless.

Your arrogance is exceeded only by your arrogance.

Y’all best look again at the war of 1812 from ANY viewpoint other than Jonny Horton’s.
