Mark Levin and the Book That Changed America
The American Spectator ^ | 11/9/2010 | Jeffrey Lord

Posted on 11/09/2010 3:43:44 AM PST by markomalley

It's the book that changed America.

And it isn't often that a book -- any book, even a popular, bestselling book like Mark Levin's Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto -- can be said to have changed the course of American politics and history. The phenomenon is rare, extremely rare, usually taking both the country and even the author by surprise.

Yet Levin's book has done just that, saluted by Minnesota Republican Congresswoman Michele Bachmann in an exclusive talk with The American Spectator as "providing [the] intellectual balance and foundation" of the Tea Party movement. A movement that stands triumphant this week in the wake of the conservative landslide that Levin himself believes can revitalize the conservative cause that Ronald Reagan once led to the White House.

The results of the 2010 revolt against the Obama Era are staggering. The success of the Tea Party; the defeat of over 60 of Nancy Pelosi's House Democrats; the election of a half dozen U.S. senators, ten governors and almost 700 state legislators. What startles even more is that one campaign after another focused on the issues Levin featured in his book -- the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States, statism, the dangers of a powerful central government.

Campaigns "motivated and inspired" specifically, says Bachmann, by Levin's Liberty and Tyranny..

Levin himself emerged as an unlikely rock star in the cause of the Constitution, the author literally besieged at book signings as thousands waited hours for a seconds-long meeting and signed copy. This video posted by a Levin fan of a book signing at Tysons Corner, Virginia, outside a rainy Washington, D.C., illustrates a fraction of the Liberty and Tyranny phenomenon that was sweeping the country.

Just me, but I was very disappointed in that book. I thought it was a complete re-hash of stuff I’d seen everywhere else, including, I dare say, in my own “Patriot’s History of the U.S.” I liked his dog book, “Rescuing Sprite,” much better.

I only wish it could have been recorded in his “hollerin’” voice.

LOL

I bought the book, read the first few pages and couldn't help but get IRRITATED with Levin's PENCHANT for OVERemphasizing so much with caps.

One of these days I'll get back a round tuit.

Levin is a coward and a fraud. A guy called in to his radio show and asked him what the Law of Nations in the Constitution referred to. Levin feigned ignorance and dumped the caller.

I never read the book, myself - figuring that I've already read the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence . . .
I can see how you would be even more of a tough audience.

Haven't seen that, either - but I do suspect it'd be a good read.

With all due respect, I have no idea what you’re talking about. I have the book on my lap as I’m typing.

The first four words of Chapter One are in all caps, which is customary.

He capitalizes specific groups of people (Founders, Statists, Conservatives) which is proper, since he references these groups throughout the book. He capitalizes specific events & things, like the American Revolution, the Roman Empire, Articles, & Constitution, among others. He also capitalizes proper names of people and nations; again .... proper.

Perhaps you have the most early edition of the book and maybe it escaped the critical, discerning eye of his editor somehow. But my verson of the book follows correct capitalization rules.

Nevertheless, while an important book, it is not necessarily an easy book to read. I am a voracious reader, so I’ve been through it 4 times or so, dragging my high school education and diploma from the School of Hard Knocks with me. On the other hand, my sweetie, who has a Master’s in Ed. Admin from the University of Chicago was gifted this book from me, and he’s only made it through the first three chapters. But he is to be forgiven. He’s a “straightened out” liberal, and all of this is new to him. He is having to unlearn all the shit they charged him thousands of dollars to deposit in his brain. But reformed he is: he not only has been voting for conservatives for two years or so, but he convinced his liberal parents to vote for three Republicans on the ballot this year. In Chicago, no less!

His parents told him that this was the first time since they immigrated from India in the 1970’s that they ever voted for a single Republican. We are making progress, my FRiend.

I suggest one chapter a week or so, and no more. Regardless of capitalization. Once you get into it, you will realize you are in the middle of the best, biggest, coolest intellectual meal you ever had.

Once I read my copy, I bought 4 more to distribute!

The Congress shall have Power . . .

To define and punish Piracies and Felonies committed on the high Seas, and Offenses against the Law of Nations;

I'd take that to mean violations of the sovereignty of other nations.

But I haven't given it a lot of thought. Why are you so exercised over the significance of that provision?
