Remember that horrible, embarrassing oval office photo of Obama talking to Netanyahu on the phone and he had his legs on the table and the sole of his shoe was front and center? And the Israelis were mortified? I almost forgot that episode-—there have been so many of them the last 2 years, it is hard to keep them all catalogued in the book of Obama Horrors.

Shoes go back a long way in both Arabic and Jewish culture. As with Thais, the feet (and shoes by extension), outside of a particular body orifice, are the most lowly things on the body and denote to a certain extent, uncleanliness and vulgarity. To hurl (shoes, sandals) them at someone is the ultimate insult. There is the Old Testament and New Testament passages about those taking off their sandals and shaking the dust off of a city which would not accept them, in contempt, and moving on.

Iraqis bashed the crap out of the fallen Hussein statue in Firdos Square, with their rubber sandals and shoes. Now another Hussein gets his just political deserts in THIS politcal statement in Tel Aviv by quite rightfully outraged people.
