Dan Walters: Debate No. 2 becomes a slugfest { Whitman v Brown }
Sacramento Bee ^ | 10/3/10 | Dan Walters

Posted on 10/03/2010 9:09:08 AM PDT by SmithL

FRESNO – For weeks, Republican Meg Whitman demanded that Jerry Brown, her Democratic rival for governor, debate her in Fresno, clearly hoping it would shore up support in the GOP-leaning San Joaquin Valley and among Latino voters, but Brown stalled.

Whitman finally got her wish Saturday in a bilingual debate sponsored by Univision, but it quickly became a slugfest as Brown pummeled her on how she handled a former housekeeper who was an illegal immigrant – a case that had erupted just days earlier.

Whitman fired Nicky Diaz Santillan in June 2009 after, she says, learning that her employee was an illegal immigrant who had used false documents. But Diaz Santillan's attorney, Gloria Allred, says a 2003 letter from the Social Security Administration questioning Diaz Santillan's Social Security number and containing a note handwritten by Whitman's husband, Griffith Harsh, proves otherwise.

Most of the questions of the two Saturday dealt with either Diaz Santillan or other immigration-related issues, the perfect opportunity for Brown, a veteran political debater, to hammer Whitman as a heartless tycoon.

If the 2003 letter were dispositive, as Allred alleges, and Whitman continued to withhold FICA and remit it to SSA (or, if it was withheld by the employment agency and they remitted to SSA) does it really take SSA 6 years to recognize that they are crediting contributions to a non-existent SSN? I guess I wouldn’t be surprised.

I believe Whitman on this and she should be sledgehammering Brown, Allred and her former employee over this.

Well, the Brown campaign DID time this perfectly. Didn't they?

I mean, with Whitman's poll numbers actually gaining among California hispanics and a Fresno debate within a week, Brown could sling mud for a month instead of waiting for an 11th hour "surprise."

Dan Walters and the Sacramento Bee, I don’t know Mr.Walters but the SacBee has been pro Democrat big government for as long as I can remember. I have no faith in them.

I read somewhere that she borrowed her sister’s name and ID.

In any case, it seems to me that it’s Jerry Brown who lost that one. The leftist propaganda mongers can’t make up their minds how to play this. First they attacked her for being mean and firing a Latino. Then they attacked her for hiring an illegal Latino. Then they started faking the evidence. I thought that her response to all this made Governor Moonbeam look like a jerk.

And is a Latino audience going to get angry if she hired a Latino and didn’t realize she was an illegal? Even if they thought she did realize it, I doubt they’ll be very angry. Except at Jerry Brown and the jerks who got the Latino fired, while they encourage illegal amnesty out of the other side of their mouths.

Perfect example of why its political suicide to try to answer all of the left's demands for explanation on their terms.

Whitman needs to answer once with authority and after that scoff at all future attempts to broach the subject.

I believe Whitman and probably many potential voters believe as I do. Allred's ploy may have backfired, a slight piece of evidence coming from KFI's John & Ken who announced during one of their early broadcasts that most E-Mails said they switched to supporting Whitman.

I was on the brink of not voting for governor this year when this attempt and its weeping illegal caused me to decide to vote for Whitman. She is not perfect and will try to control spending and taxes.

The illegal Latino was also paid $23.00 an hour by Whitman...not a bad gig for doing the dishes.

Meg did very well. Brown looked like an idiot. Now it depends on how many idiots turn up to vote for Brown?

Everyone needs to realize that this woman is a FALSE- DOCUMENTED IMMIGRANT.

She is NOT an UN-DOCUMENTED person.

She DID have documents.

They were false documents & she knew it.

I think Whitman should make an ad showing that EVERY EMPLOYER in the USA is in the same potentioal bind with false documents.

Copiers & lazer printing produce items that are very hard to tell if false.

Illegals are schooled before they even try to cross the border how to fool the American gringos & get work.

Another question for the illegal woman & Gloria ALL RED:

Diaz got a California driver’s license in 1991.
WHERE was she working from 1991 to late 2000 when she went to work for Whitman?
WHERE was she working from June 2009 to present?

WHEN EXACTLY did she come into the country? I am thinking it was long before she got the driver’s license in 1991.

NO MATTER——she is here illegally & she is presenting employment agencies & Whitman with FALSE DOCUMENTS.

How many million employers are there here in the USA who are in the same kind of jeopardy when they try to hire someone???

What kind of backlash against LEGAL immigrants will this end up causing?

Immigrants here legally have to be very pi$$ed at Diaz. Diaz took the cap off the problem & showed every American- whether in Fargo, North Dakota or in Jackpot, Nevada that you cannot be careful enough in hiring ANY employee.

Jerry Brown is the highest legal authority in the state of California.

He has his butt in a bind over this, IMO.

HE should be prosecuting this woman & every other illegal.

What I think of Gloria ALL RED I cannot write here.

A FRAUDULENT story, Sac Bee. And you in the leftist media will have difficulty ramming it home, even in whack-job Kalifornia.

It has been unclear in all the media whether this was a NON_EXISTANT Soc Sec number or a number that legally belonged to someone else. Say she had been using your dead grandma’s number. That could go on for years.

I would like to have that cleared up.

I would also like clarification as to whether Whitman was paying the employment agency for the gross salary & the agency was doing all the payroll stuff. I am under the impression from her comments that she was the employer——& I back that up with the fact that the ‘non’match letter came to Whitman. Whitman would have to have been preparing the W-2 for that to happen. Also- Whitman produced a W-4 that Diaz filled out to get the job. That is the information that an employer uses to prepare payroll checks & to prepare the W-2 at year end. Therefore, I conclude that Whitman is the employer. The agency was just supposed to screen any & all applicants for the position. The agency did a rotten job—with the same FALSE documents— & then sent Diaz to Whitman.

I think Whitman has a legal case against the employment agency.

Think about a company called “Labor Ready”.
You can hire someone for a day or week or whatever. You pay a higher rate to Labor Ready & that is all you do.
The person is not an employee on YOUR payroll. They are on Labor Ready’s payroll & THEY have all the payroll tax burdens. Labor Ready also has the burden of determining the eligibility status of the person they send to you.

I've seen one this morning that has Brown leading Whitman 45 to 43.

IMO, even if Whitman wins, she will be stuck with an overwhelming number of democrats in the the State Senate and Assembly (California has two houses of representatives). They are the lap-dogs by the public sector unions, so any talk of reform will come to naught.

Brown has a good chance of finally solidifying the job of making California the first socialist state.

AFAIK the social security number given to Whitman by the illegal immigrant had a different name on it. The number
itself is valid. Which is why Meg’s husband wrote on the
social security letter — Nicky, check into to this. This
was 7 years ago, and the letter was far from ominous sounding. Why would Meg’s husband remember this letter
amongst the thousands received by the Whitman’s since then.

The letter specifically stipulated that no action should
be taken by the employer against the employee due to the letter.

Walters and the Sac Commie Bee are hard core Dems.

The Commie Bee was the scum that spread the phony “ Meg did not vote “ lie.

The Commie Bee tried to obtain Meg's voting records but the voting districts had destroyed the records BUT the BEE spun a phony story as if there is no record of her voting ever !

Walters is a Dem snake .

Who knows what was mis-translated in that Univision debate. They probably had Whitman admitting in Spanish that she whips Mexicans with rubber hoses and tortures Mexican children with electrodes attached to thier genitalia. Univsion is an enemy propagada organ.
