Politics: Conservative Orange County, Calif., has for years been plagued by an anomaly: The congressional district in its heart is held by a big-spending Democrat. But a flare-up of identity politics may change that.
The 47th District spreads across all of Santa Ana, much of Anaheim, Garden Grove and Fullerton. Census data indicate that roughly half the population is foreign-born, the overwhelmingly largest group being Hispanic, with an admixture of vibrant Asian communities creating a kind of blue-color cosmopolitanism in the center of an affluent coastal county.
Fourteen years ago, Democrat Loretta Sanchez managed to oust GOP Rep. Bob Dornan, prompting the right-wing firebrand to lodge complaints of widespread voter fraud. Sanchez survived and, mislabeling herself a Blue Dog Democrat, has sailed to victory seven times since.
This time her foe a Vietnamese version of Florida's Marco Rubio is Assemblyman Van Tran, who is deftly harnessing the anti-incumbent winds. Tran has been making the most of Sanchez's unpopular votes for ObamaCare and the bailouts as well as her opposition to extending the Bush tax cuts.
Last week a flailing Sanchez fell into a steaming bowl of pho when, only 2 points ahead in one poll, she told a Spanish-language TV station: "The Vietnamese and the Republicans are, with an intensity, (trying) to take this seat this seat (from which) we have done so much for our community to take this seat and give it to this Van Tran, who is very anti-immigrant and very anti-Hispanic."
Even for an ethnicity-exploiting pol, it's pretty hard to pack more offensiveness into a single awkward sentence. For starters, Tran is an immigrant with a distinguished civic record, having escaped with his parents as communist troops seized Saigon in 1975.

I’m no English professor, but I have a feeling that either this article was dictated, or an eager beaver editor burned his toast. I have a feeling that: “with an admixture of vibrant Asian communities creating a kind of blue-color cosmopolitanism in the center of an affluent coastal county.”
Should actually read: with an admixture of vibrant Asian communities creating a kind of blue-collar cosmopolitanism in the center of an affluent coastal county.
I suggest Johnny Cashes song “The Ring of Fire” for the Democrats in a little over a month. They are going down in flames.
I’ve had personal relationships w/persons who escaped Viet Nam because they lost the wor. Kudos to them.
They must get paid by the word...
Isn’t this what the author wrote?
I sure do miss Bob Dornan.
I remember how the election was stolen and the GOP did NOTHING for him. May those bastards rot in hell!
Loretta Sanchez’s defeat would be a great victory for conservative politics.
Loretta Sanchez’s defeat would be a great victory for conservative politics.
There is also a major state Senate race going on in the same area.
Very well said
It would be indeed
author wrote “blue-color”; s/b “blue-collar”
Actually, Loretta Sanchez's defeat would be a great victory for the freedom of the people in the 47th District.
The world will always better off without an egotistic socialist statist.
Do you have ANY thoughts on the issues discussed in the article?
“Should actually read: with an admixture of vibrant Asian communities creating a kind of blue-collar cosmopolitanism in the center of an affluent coastal county.”
It could be somewhat less purple, too.
Oops! “wor”=war. (Giggle.)
Please ignore anything I post after 1900. I obviously type in my sleep. At least I don’t drive in my sleep. :)
