Charles Krauthammer: Dems' tea-party fairy tale
A desperate party lashes out at a new movement to hold off a November tsunami.
By Charles Krauthammer
Posted on Mon, Sep. 27, 2010

When facing a tsunami, what do you do? Pray, and tell yourself stories. I am not privy to the Democrats' private prayers, but I do hear the stories they're telling themselves. The new meme is that there's a civil war raging in the Republican Party. The tea party will wreck it from within and prove to be the Democrats' salvation.

I don't blame anyone for seeking a deus ex machina when about to be swept out to sea. But this salvation du jour is flimsier than most.

In fact, the big political story of the year is the contrary: that a spontaneous and quite anarchic movement with no recognized leadership or discernible organization has been merged with such relative ease into the Republican Party.

The tea party could have become Perot '92, an antigovernment movement that spurned the Republicans, went third-party, and cost George H.W. Bush reelection, ending 12 years of Republican rule. Had the tea party gone that route, it would have drained the Republican Party of its most mobilized supporters and deprived Republicans of the sweeping victory that awaits them Nov. 2.

Instead, it planted its flag within the party and, with its remarkable energy, created the enthusiasm gap. Such gaps are measurable. This one is a chasm. This year's turnout for the Democratic primaries (as a percentage of eligible voters) was the lowest ever recorded. Republican turnout was the highest since 1970.

The RATS are still stuck on stupid. They sure do know how to waste money.

Thank you, Rick Santelli, thank you American people, thank God...

Chuck and the GOP poo-bahs ought to get down on their knees and thank Sarah Palin for that!

I disagree! I can’t imagine very many Democrats praying under any circumstances . . .

This has already been posted, and I’m sick of Krauthammer. Why should I hit on an article twice, when CK is clearly so stunningly late to the party?

I still think RINOs are democrat infiltrators and are thus more dangerous than overt progressives in the democrat party.

They have Palin to thank for that as well. Her steadfast assertions that the tea-party movement had a natural home in the Republican Party has made CK's assertion valid.

But here's a little newsflash for you Charles: She ain't happy with you and the Beltway GOP attacking tea-party candidates like Christine O'Donnell. The tea-party video she released (with nary a mention of the GOP) and her joint interview with Limbaugh tonight may be a warning to you folks. Take heed.

...CK is clearly so stunningly late to the party?

On Special Report with Bret Baier, during the week before the election in November of 2008 during the panel discussion, Charles Krauthammer said something to the affect that "An Obama Administration won't be that bad". I spent the next fifteen minutes picking my jaw up off the floor. I used to be a Krauthammer fan, but he lost me right there. Those seven words speak volumes about Mr. Krauthammer and made absolutely clear to me his position and status as one of the Republican elitists. If he is so damned smart, as he and others like Rush Limbaugh constantly remind us, how could he not see the Obamanation that was barreling at the USA, given what was known about Obama and his Marxist ideological beliefs at the time?

Late to the party, yes, but at least he came.

However, the deep respect I once had for Krauthammer (though I disagreed with him on some issues), has been irreparably damaged by his elitist comments about O'Donnell. Shameful.

Oh yes, and that "He sounded Presidential" garbage he spewed after an Obama debate made me wonder what in heaven's name he stood for.....

I still don't have an answer to that question.

Interesting take from the same Krauthammer who is trying to undermine a tea party conservative candidate, who won the nomination over a Rino from Delaware. While I agree with his message, he is the wrong messanger.

If I’m not mistaken Gov. Palin was one of the first nationally known politicians to recognize the potential the Tea Party was going to have. It was the town halls and the DC event of last year that proved the movement wasn’t going to die out. Gov. Palin recognized the force the movement was going to have in her speech in Hong Kong.

The culture of the Beltway has an insulating effect on its longtime denizens.

He’s not so damn smart. He’s trained and has developed articulation skills. So he is able to summarize things that are occasionally relevant and intelligent.

The Beltway chattering class looks for such persons that are able to consistently articulate a point of view regardless of the validity of that POV. Then such persons develop their ‘brand’ and they become fixtures in the media.

Krauthammer is old inventory that needs to be turned over, along with Rove, Kristol and so many others. As Demint I believe said, “It’s time for new blood”.

He’s trained and has developed articulation skills.

He's also a Doctor of Psychiatry, trained at Haaaaarvard, so he comes by his elitism naturally. My own personal opinion is his Ivy League credentials should immediately disqualify his opinion from consideration, given the mess that the Ivy League-rs have made of this country. I'm sure he uses the knowledge he gained studying Psychiatry at Haaaarvard to carefully choose his words....kind of like the Army psy-opps folks that intern at CNN.....

Krauthammer started out in politics by working in the Carter administration. He then became a speech writer for Walter Mondale. He is proabortion, antideath penalty, pro embryonic stem cell research and pro-high taxation of CO2/energy.

Some east coasters still call him conservative. Which tells you a lot about where they are on the spectrum.

I never thought of Krauthammer as a conservative, but I have always respected his thought process. (I'm one of those rare people around here who doesn't demand 100% conformity to my opinion to earn my respect).

But when Krauthammer talked about Obama's being "presidential" after those horrific, transparent debate appearances, and now that he's behaved like a liberal snob regarding the Delaware election results, he's lost the respect I did have for him.

I'd like to get it back, but this article is certainly not enough.
