WASHINGTON Taking his blowhard comedy act to Congress, Stephen Colbert told lawmakers that a day picking beans alongside illegal immigrants convinced him that farm work is "really, really hard." "It turns out and I did not know this most soil is at ground level," Colbert testified Friday. Also, "It was hotter than I like to be."
Still, Colbert expressed befuddlement that more Americans aren't clamoring to "begin an exciting career" in the fields and instead are leaving the low-paid work to illegal immigrants.
Staying in character as a Comedy Central news commentator, Colbert offered a House hearing his "vast" knowledge, drawn from spending a single day on a New York farm as a guest of the United Farm Workers.

One of my conceits is that Caligula used his horse to make that same point about the political talent he saw.
You are exactly right!!
My maternal grandfather was a tractor and farm implement mechanic for International Harvester for forty years before going out on his own. A large part of my childhood was spent on his farm. One of our neighbors was killed when he hooked a buried 2” pipeline with a plow and flipped his tractor (this was before the advent of the spring loaded throttle). One of my schoolmates was filling a propane tank when he was overcome by the gas escaping from the tank vent line. When they found his body his head was partially frozen by the liquid spewing from the now overfilled tank’s vent. Agriculture can be extremely dangerous.
As a Hispanic woman, I’m horrified.
I’m also horrified at Speaker Pelosi. She said that she had no problem with Colbert at the hearing, testifying. She said that “He’s an American” and that he has every right to speak in front of the committee. Now if she only allowed Republicans to speak and engage like Stephen did instead of changing the locks on them to several committee doors.
Yup. You are exactly right.
The fifth column will focus wherever they’re told to focus, This Colbert dog and pony show was staged for the sheeple, to distract from looking at the Coates testimony. If the event with Colbert wasn’t staged and media told to cover it, there would not have been the fool Conyers’ invitation for Colbert to leave the hearing then retracted.
They act like every hispanic person in this country works on the farms, does their laundry or some other ‘unskilled’ labor. It really was sickening to watch.
And of course, Nazi Nancy thinks this is all perfectly acceptable since her stupid grape farm has been using ‘mexican slaves’ for years!
See my tagline. :)
Mr. Colbert should spend some time on a construction site if he wants to work with some illegals "doing the work Americans won't."
This just proves what we have been saying for a long time that congress and the Democrats are nothing but a joke. The idiot Colbert was brouhgt in by the Democrat Chair and only proves what a bunch of comics they all are.
My grandfather was a farmer. Used to pick rocks every year. Every year, he would pick rocks. You would think that after a while there wouldn’t be any more rock to pick. It was the considered opinion of my grandfather that the rocks growed. I am not so sure that he was wrong.
If you’d ever seen the farms in and around the area where I grew up, in the foothills of North Carolina, you’d know he was right, lol. Sparks flying off the plows. The rocky soil holds moisture well, that’s one good point. People with garden centers and landscaping firms are actually paying to “harvest” the native fieldstone that surfaces with every plowing, that’s another. That’s about it, though.
What’s next, kudzu as a cash crop? Whoops, it is. Wacky world we’re living in.
You mean his audience of young, spoiled brats who haven't done a day of hard work in their lives? That seems like a distinct possibility.
Caligula was probably quite literally insane. I’m not sure he was up to subtle political commentary. If he had been it would have been a clever one.
If you put an insane person in as absolute autocrat, I’m not sure why you should expect sober competency in his rubber-stamp assemblies.
One of Caligula’s more memorable lines was when he expressed his great regret that the Roman people didn’t have a single neck he could have slit in a single moment. Although I must admit he was approximately what they deserved.
What “kind” of congress would ask a comedian to testify? I guess with Franken in DC, they are somehow credible? Waiting to hear from George Clooney and Lady Gaga next. What a waste of OUR money!
I think its time to call Jeff Dunham and Achmed the dead terrorist down there to testify on terrorism.
There is no tougher job than picking rocks.
For a lame routine like that,he has to refer constantly to his notes? Too bad he couldn’t borrow his hero’s teleprompter.
