California's Cities Should Look to Oxfordshire

California, now in the midst of a heated debate on high-speed rail, could learn a thing or two from a few small villages in England about consolidating their opposition. Residents from five villages in Oxfordshire created the Villages of Oxfordshire Opposing HS2 (High-Speed Rail 2) action group to voice their concerns about the proposed project.

HS2 would link London and Birmingham by 2025, going through Finmere, Mixbury, Fingford, Fulwell, and Newton Purcell in north Oxfordshire. Not only would the rail line greatly alter the countryside landscape, but it would also create an immense amount of noise pollution. Trains would run through these villages at 250 mph about every three minutes.

This is one aspect of high-speed rail that its advocates never bring up -- the things are loud! Now, rail-fans will note that living next to an airport is noisy, too. But imagine the national outrage if planes flew a hundred feet off the ground as they passed across the country.

Take a listen to the Acela and it's not even really high-speed. Just another thing to add to their being unprofitable, unwanted and unnecessary.

LOL! Cool video. They are loud. It is all about big multinationals like Siemens and others hooking up with crooked politicians for kickbacks to push a fake green transport nonsense idea.

Free Republic is getting really stupid with that lib idiot Willie Green pimping HS rail and light rail plus all the Apple idiots pimping Apple’s crap. I hate Microsoft too. I get sick of hypesters on FR - it is not supposed to be about pimping products.

The Acela does what? 120 mph? Something pushing 200 or 250 mph is moving a lot of air.

A Californian thinks that a dim-bulb-crat state government will listen to mere people?

Bwahahahahahahaha.

LOL! My friend is a huge simpsons fan. I missed that.

It sounds hilarious.

Light and HS rail will come in handy for gangs in Detroit.

I looked up the Acela in the NE corridor in that video. They avg about 8,700 riders a day. Does not sound like a lot. Top speed 150 mph. Avg speed 70.

They charge more than the old Amtrak train and the old train is almost as fast. Amazing.

We should leave leave trains to people who know how to run them - Germans and the Swiss.

That episode was written by Conan O brien before he split from the Simpsons production co. I dont watch the Simspons for the past 5 years because it’s become a libtard show, especially when Simpson “voted” for Dumbobama in an episode 2 years ago.

Oh. So they went libtard.

I was searching youtube for the MonoRail episode and found that Conan wrote it. LOL!

The Music Man meets greedy govt politicians looking for kickbacks, union jobs etc.

There was a story in WSJ a month or so ago...

About a high speed train between two minor cities in China.

It runs 24/7 and is FULL each time both ways.

The line has a bigger passenger number (just between the two cities) than all of Amtrack combined and is financially viable.

The key is low Chinese construction costs compared to union rates in USA.

LOL! I bet all the rail workers are paid peanuts. The riders have no other choice so I bet it is packed.
