"To survive in a hostile world, guys need to embrace girly jobs and dirty diapers," argued the Newsweek writers Andrew Romano and Tony Dokoupil in the subheadline of their September 20 article "Men's Lib."
The writers set out to explain "[w]hy its time to reimagine masculinity at work and at home."
If American men want to be competitive in a global economy, they argued, they need to suck it up and get comfortable with the idea of working traditionally "girly jobs" and/or being stay at home dads:
Its possible to imagine protectionist trade and immigration policies boosting blue-collar employment at the margins. But the U.S. cant stop globalization. If male moraleand the American economyare ever going to recover, the truth is that the next generation of Homer Simpsons will have to stop searching for outsourced manufacturing jobs and start working toward teaching, nursing, or social-service positions instead.
Fair enough. But Romano and Dokoupil also cast their gaze across the Atlantic, arguing America needs public policies that emulate European countries on paid parental leave, particularly paid paternal leave (emphasis mine):

Newsweek is still in publication? =.=
As if our competition is Europeans. Do they think the Arabs, Chinese, and Indian men are going to embrace diapers?
The guy who paid $1 for this metrosexual weekly reader paid too much.
Stop MAKING anything and "teach" "repair" and "social engineer" instead. America must remain PRODUCTIVE in order to have a place in the world economy other than CONSUMER.
When will this Marxist magazine be terminated?
Well at least the Europeans have only elected idiots and not evil muslim idiots like the USA.
Geert Wilders rocks. Americans are too busy being brainwashed watch 6 networks of Islamo-TV. Cheering ball games in between “stupid white man” commercials. TV is evil.
Shouldn’t this title really be
“Newsweek to American Gays...”
I don’t particularly have a problem with men doing anything they want in society. More power to them.
At the same time it has been somewhat interesting to watch the role reversal of women and men over the last few decades.
Men now sport ear-rings. They use makeup. Their hair in some instances more resembles the traditional look of a woman. This move to make sure men are more empathetic or emotional is rather strange too.
If you watch the programs on television these days you come away with two interesting dynamics. Men are constantly crying. Women are constantly hitting, slapping, or kicking them. And rather than the programs presenting this as violence or abusive, it is presented as humorous, something that makes the woman look cool.
Even when men are shown in groups without women around, the behaviors are often more like the traditional behaviors of women, than of men. There are of course exceptions to this, but the trend is definitely in this direction.
please, sweet Lord, do not ever allow my real man to turn into a euroweenie. amen
America was not built into the Fortress of Democracy by a group of limp-shouldered, pansy-assed, pillow-biting, whiny metrosexuals of the sort who’d soil their designer silk underwear if they ever encountered a real man in a real fight.
Where is the Girly-Man Mega-Hurl Alert for this article?
Well, I’ve certainly changed my daughter’s diaper and fed her....but stay at home dad? No sir. Not me.
>men are shown in groups without women around, the behaviors are often more like the traditional behaviors of women, than of men.
Bingo. Definitely in real life too.
Guys night out now often resembles exactly what you say.
Now I’m the neanderthal!
A dollar doesn't buy much these days, does it?
Dirty Little Secret:
Women are extremely attracted to masculine men who have a game plan, are confident and can take charge of any situation but are also open to compromise with their GF or spouse.
Women do not like weenies(this is true of liberal women also but they will NEVER admit it).
I ain't ever seen a European like this. LOL.
“We Can Learn Some Lessons from Europe on How to Be a Man”
Yea, they did such a good job in the last two World Wars.
