Cyrus the Great's cylinder returns to Iran

A clay cylinder dating from the time of one of Persia's greatest rulers, Cyrus the Great, has been returned on loan to Iran following a prolonged dispute with the British Museum in London.

In February Iran threatened to cut ties with the British Museum in protest to what it called politically motivated delays in returning the cylinder.

However the museum says the delay occurred so that the cylinder could be compared with two stone tablets that were recently discovered.

British Museum director Neil MacGregor says the cylinder has plenty of historical significance.

"It's about Cyrus's respect for different peoples and different faiths, because it's this decree that allows the Jews brought from Jerusalem to return home and build the temple," he said.

"So this is a critical part of the history of Iraq, of the Jews, of Iran and indeed of the whole Middle East."

Well, I hope the British took good pictures and measurements.

Kiss good-bye another great relic of antiquity.

Sorry, but what’s the point of posting this?

An Islamic regime such as IRI has clearly demonstrated in decades that it has no respect for its own citizens (hence human rights declared in Cyrus the Great Cylinder), nor the pre-Islamic history of Iran.

Using Cyrus the Great cylinder & politicising it is an insult. And, Yes, the cylinder should be returned to Iran eventually & NOT on loan.

Do the Brits & IRI still love each other?

Thanx for posting. Sorry to hear it’s been returned to Iran under this regime though.

What are the odds they destroy it since it doesn’t mesh with their idea of a world ruled by islam?

>>>”What are the odds they destroy it since it doesn’t mesh with their idea of a world ruled by islam?”

I would somewhat re-phrase: What are the odds they keep it, ‘til it serves their final, publicised & politicised purpose, and then suddenly & magically “it” is, suddenly or unexpectedly, destroyed?

Rubbish, you do not have the original. You cannot possibly have it - because I do. I bought it from a very nice rug merchant. Guaranteed authentic.

So there!

“It’s about Cyrus’s respect for different peoples and different faiths,

what pontificating BS!

I’m not sure who’s more sickening - the Iranian regime or the British crackpot one.
