Sheriffs in North Carolina want access to state computer records identifying anyone with prescriptions for powerful painkillers and other controlled substances.
The state sheriff's association pushed the idea Tuesday, saying the move would help them make drug arrests and curb a growing problem of prescription drug abuse. But patient advocates say opening up people's medicine cabinets to law enforcement would deal a devastating blow to privacy rights.
Allowing sheriffs' offices and other law enforcement officials to use the state's computerized list would vastly widen the circle of people with access to information on prescriptions written for millions of people. As it stands now, doctors and pharmacists are the main users.

They need to be indicted for even wanting that info. NOYFB.
don’t worry, guys. in 5 years or less all this stuff will be available to your iPhone.
Unless I’m in his or her jail, no sheriff has any business knowing what medications my physician has prescribed for me.
The fact that they can even make the request is scary. I thought this was personal for you doctors info only? Wait till the government takes over our records, oh man ...
Ludicrous, but typical. All power corrupts...you know the rest.
The land of ANDY of MAYBERRY!
Wonder what the stats are on people on prescriptions for powerful painkillers and crimes?.
iow warrantless searching of personal medical records.
what is it sherriffs? the indict a ham sandwich judge not being so free with rubber stamping any more?
Relax, read between the lines.
LEOs realize they will never get such records, but are using thisas a scare tactic for the dopers.
“We’ll never use your medical records for anything other than your medical care. Honest!”
F this bozo and the cruiser he road in on.
This guy wants to have reasonable cause to charge people with driving under the influence, even if they don’t show symptoms. Then he can blood test them and see if something pops up.
“Hey Dave, it says here she takes Xanax.” “Booker Dano!”
Nah. Thanks for trying to save us, but no thanks.
NFW How can they even think this would even pass constitutional muster. Oh yeah, we have a “living constitution” now.
Markedly lower than the number of Law “enforcement” “officers” who are breaking the law themselves, I’d wager.
Well, I’m on Oxycontin and Dilaudid for Chronic Pancreatitis and I haven’t even gotten a speeding ticket in the past 4 years. Before that, I wasn’t on pain killers, but I did get some speeding tickets, so....
How about mandatory steroid testing for the sheriff and his deputies?
Sure. So if they were given access, they'd turn it down right? And of course 10 years for now, the then current LEOs would never abuse the law either. No, never. Relax. There's never going to be any death panels either...they'll just um...bend the cost curve. ;-) Anyone want to buy a bridge?
In other news, people taking painkillers want full details of Sheriff’s private business.
They’re just getting a head start on the Feds. The Feds will have all the access they want when Obamacare goes into effect.
Some lawyers are probably already licking their lips looking for HIIPA privacy violation suits.
