I can see this mosque issue being for her what the Panama canal issue was for Reagan. An important policy issue to be sure, but one with profound symbolism that connects her to the heartland of this great country.
Obama is a completely tone deaf elitist and she is, as David Broder has rightly called her, a pitch perfect populist.

The complaint is that the Muslims have the gall and audacity to insult the 3,000 martyrs of 9/11 by erecting their Cordoba mosque so near the site of that Islamo-fascist atrocity.
Further, we are enraged that the government (from Bloomberg to Obama) are fully supporting the building of this mosque, and in Bloomberg's case, are greasing the skids to rush the city approval process.
Lastly, I don't know that I want to apply American principles of fairness and freedom of religion to Islam. Their "holy book" commands them to destroy all unbelievers wherever they find them. That means us. What other religion commands such of its followers? I don't know of a single one.
Sorry, but I'm unsympathetic to the Muslim's side of this controversy. As it is, there are already 100 mosques in NY City. Why do they need this one? In this, of all places?

I hail from Rockland County, myself.
On 9/11 I lost a brother-in-law from Cantor-Fitzgerald,
several school friends, 2 co-workers,
and I don’t know how many aquaintances.
They were Police and Fire, visitors,
workers in the Towers.
Anyone from that area can recall the
endless funerals and memorial services.
After that, I lost my job in the Trade Show
environment, husband loss his job as
a contractor from Merrill,
we went thru retirement savings and 401k’s
and savings to survive.
Sold house and moved north for better opps,
and NOW we’re finally pulling away from
the devastation that scorched us that day.
Many others lost much more.
That said, the mere fact of being an American is enough
reason to protest the building of
this slap-in-our-face symbol of conquest.
