“...the decision to have a child is seen as an individual choice...”
That’s an odd statement. Wasn’t it always the choice of the individual?

Never wanted to, never had a “close call”, too old to start now.
How do you think I can afford all the trips I go on?

We’ve been married 24 years and have never had any kids.

Jeez....this poll/study/accounting - whatever must have been amongst real Americans. It certainly couldn’t have included the illegal anchor-baby brood mares and heifers that have invaded this country. I see scores of them every day pushing their golden goose along in a baby carriage every day.....

My prediction is that after a while the only people who have children will be those who have a deep genetic predisposition to wanting a baby. No more people having babies by accident or because their parents want grandchildren, or because all their friends are having them.
Then the only people around will be those who are genetically predispositioned to want babies...
...soon followed by one heck of a baby BOOM!

Who can afford them? We have an economy that worships at the altar of 70 hr. workweeks.

Having children used to be almost a universal desire among both sexes.
Whatever is causing this new morality, I think it is generally a bad thing. Of course each person should be free to do what they want but I think it is often a sign of selfishness among whichever spouse does not want children.

Meanwhile, just 41 percent of Americans say having children is necessary to a good marriage I suspect that a good marriage is built on love and commitment.
On the other hand, I can't even imagine a world where my, now, adult kids don't live. What an odd place. Yikes!

And then some people wonder why we’re really not that interested in curbing illegal immigration.
If we don’t reproduce in sufficient quantities, our children and grandchildren will be speaking Chinese...if they’re allowed to speak at all.

Ditto, we are in our 30s and haven’t started having kids yet, albeit we are looking at adoption.
