Majority Leader Steny Hoyer made official Tuesday morning what most insiders have known for months: Congress won’t do a budget this year.
Instead, Democrats are pushing an alternative route that falls well short of the more rigorous annual budget resolution — a short-term resolution that will call for discretionary spending lower than in President Barack Obama’s fiscal 2011 budget. But he said Congress wouldn’t take longer-term budget action before hearing from Obama’s fiscal commission in December. Republicans have lambasted Democrats for not passing a budget resolution, saying that’s the first time it’s happened since 1976.
In pushing for budget cuts in his speech before an event sponsored by the progressive think tank Third Way, Hoyer urged scrutiny of military and entitlement spending on Tuesday, while also defending Congress’ spending as necessary to revive the economy.
“We’re lying to ourselves and our children if we say we can maintain our current levels of entitlement spending, defense spending, and taxation without bankrupting our country,” he said.

If Congress has 10 legitimate jobs, 9 of those jobs occupy just 10% in importance. Passing a budget is the only Congressional prerogative, mandate, tasking — that even remotely defines the institution.
And now they just punt. They don’t even vote “present”.
Freakin scoundrels. How are the congressional approval ratings doing? Whatever they are, it’s too high.
Yah, good general campaign issue. As a citizen I’m incensed that Congress has as it’s main responsibility the creation of a budget. That’s what Congress does, along with declaring war and impeachment.
The Dems will make it partisan (you didn’t pass a budget once either! nanny-nanny boo boo) . . . but who gives a rat’s ass? Throw them all out and good riddance.
MEMO TO HOYER: I used to work up on "your hill". Do you want me to come up there and find waste so we can tell the voters what you ARE GOING TO CUT? Huh?
