Toxins in air from evaporating oil may pose greater threat to Gulf residents than oily water

Toxins that are released into the air from evaporating oil and dispersants may pose a greater health risk to clean-up workers and Gulf residents than oily water when the thickest parts of the oil slick wash ashore.

The Institute for Southern Studies (ISS) reported as early as May 10 that, “the latest evaluation of air monitoring data shows a serious threat to human health from airborne chemicals emitted by the ongoing deep water gusher.”

A report published by the Louisiana Environmental Action Network (LEAN) analyzed data released by the EPA taken from a testing site in Venice, LA between April 26 and May 26 (see chart). The results show unsafe levels of both Hydrogen Sulfide and VOCs in the air.

There have been rumors, reports and talk of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) developing plans to evacuate the Gulf coast for up to 200 miles inland if the air becomes too toxic to breathe. While that would obviously be a worst-case scenario, if it is true that the government is even considering that possibility, then that also may be cause for alarm.

Looks to me like the the toxin levels of oil/corexit in the air are already dangerously high.

Scary stuff. This is going to get far worse before it gets better.

This article is complete and total garbage. NONE of the concentrations are anywhere close to being dangerous.

The "physical symptom" from H2S is that you can SMELL IT. It is NOT dangerous until levels 100X higher than those given.

And both of the organizations quoted are far left/green. The truth is not to be had from such sources.

Knowing how the humidity and heat can intensify any odors, being there day after day breathing those fumes, couldn’t be a picnic.

What about the stuff you can’t smell?

200 miles inland is pretty much the entire state of Florida.

Oh great, so we’re back to the miasma theory of health care now. Let me know when they bring back bloodletting....

I wonder truly indeed if a hurricane would actually help wash the Gulf clean.

If so then it could start with creating huge man made dust storms off the east coast of Africa.

That’s okay. Eric Holder’s law firm will start the lawsuits soon.

Being less than half a mile from the Gulf, this is not good news for Mr. & Mrs. 2ndDivisionVet. She just had a stroke in April, neither one of us in great shape, don’t need any more problems. Thanks, hard-working chief executive (or is that golfer-in-chief?)

My Liberal sister sent me an email earlier this week concerning the complete evacuation of all Gulf Coast states due to this.....and guess where those people would have to go...yep, the good old internment camp!
Now the reason I mention my sister being Liberal is she loves the environment and this “crap” according to her is really on her last nerve....even to the point where she is questioning the confidence of her beloved candidate. Only too happy to capitalize on this, I make sure I send her information on a steady basis on other incompetence which are so obvious to me and I am hoping I too will not have to waste this disaster!

Like the little boy that cried wolf, I no automatic believe it when some experts tells me the world is coming to an end.

This all may be true, or it may be partially true or it may be entirely false. We can no longer trust those that wish to warn us since they may have an agenda our friends in the media do not report.

It's not as far fetched as you might believe. Sour crude is loaded with hydrogen sulfide and other nasties. That being said though, the overall diluent effect of the ocean water and air would keep the concentration levels down below toxicity. You may be able to smell it as our senses are very in-tune to the odor of lower concentrations of H2S. Higher concentrations shut down the olfactory senses and then kill you pretty quickly. If that were the case, there's no way any vessels could operate in the area.

Probably not good for the fishies though...

Hey, we’ve been putting up with toxins in the air from the MSM for decades.

And both of the organizations quoted are far left/green. The truth is not to be had from such sources.

This is just jury conditioning in preparation for the multiple lawsuits to follow. I am reminded of how the dust from the collapsing towers of the World Trade Center became a deadly culprit several years afterwards. They claimed the responders were not adequately warned or equipped. This stuff on the gulf is the same.

The toxins come from the dispersant chemicals...not the oil.
