Great grandmother dies after doctors fail to diagnose broken neck

A great grandmother died just two weeks after banging her head because doctors failed to spot her broken neck.

Maud Cole, 86, was admitted to hospital after a fall but medics discharged her on the same day, claiming an X-ray was unnecessary.

An inquest ruled that the pensioner, who was recovering from a stroke, died of a broken neck and her family are now considering legal action against Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

Retired caretaker Mrs Cole, who lived in a care home at Askern, Doncaster, was described as mobile and independent by staff.

After being discharged she was readmitted to the hospital eight days later after her condition deteriorated.

Five days later Mrs Cole, who was complaining of neck pain, went for a CT scan and the break was detected.

Her condition worsened rapidly after she was considered unsuitable for surgery and she died the next day.

Her condition worsened rapidly after she was considered unsuitable for surgery

Because she's too old and it's her duty to die anyway?

Sounds like 0bamacare to me.

It’s getting really scary when things that were comedy skits 40 years ago become real life situations.

2nd Patient: I’ve got a triple fracture of the right leg, dislocated collar bone and multiple head injuries, so I do most of the heavy work, like helping the surgeon.

Interviewer’s Voice: What does that involve?

2nd Patient: Well, at the moment we’re building him a holiday home.

Interviewer’s Voice: What about the nurses?

2nd Patient: Well, I don’t know about them. They’re not allowed to mix with the patients.

Interviewer’s Voice: Do all the patients work?

2nd Patient: No, no, the ones that are really ill do sport.

I would put this down to “bad luck”.

At her age, her immune system probably did not create the inflammation and resultant pain that would show up in a younger person. And without any indicator of reduced mobility or numbness, it would be hard as all get out to detect any problem. Even an X-Ray might be inconclusive.

This is why in the US, because of our overly aggressive medical litigation, whenever and elderly or disabled person has a fall, they can only be moved with great care, by experts. But all that does is reduce the litigation.

Patient: “Doctor. It hurts when I do this”
Doctor: “Don’t do that”

Doctor: “You sprained your neck. Take Advil”
Patient: “Can I get another opinion”?
Doctor: “Yeah. You’re ugly too”.

Okay, I’m going to assume that “banging her head” involved hitting it on something, not rocking out, correct?

Heck, it took me 24 Hr of hanging out in the (tertiary care U Hospital) ER to convince the docs that my appendix needed swift removal.

It was the same with my mom...they kept telling her she was probably constipated. She knew she wasn’t. Good grief.

How do you suffer a fall and they don’t take an x-ray or MRI? How do they dare call themselves practicing medicine? Geez, I went to the ER with some kind of unexplained pain and they’re doing all kinds of imaging. And that’s just for pain, I’m sure if I’d said I’d fallen, I’d be in front of an x-ray machine in minutes.

I understand trying to save money, but don’t you try to find out what’s wrong with the patient, and then try to save money via various treatment options? I’m not calling for Obamacare here, I’m just suggesting that if cost cutting is the primary motive, there are ways to do it.

The ways things are going over there, I think I’d rather get sick in Mexico or Costa Rica than in England.

Some doctors purposely do not provide some procedures if they determine that someone is too old.

My father was only 73 at the time and very active when a doctor decided a procedure was unnecessary. When questioned as to why he refused to perform it he replied, "Well, if he was younger I'd do it right away."

He got another doctor. Who was that doctor to say that my dad was finished living already?

Long, but bear with me.

I just spent several days in a hospital. For over 30 years I've had problems with chest pains. The first time I went to a hospital the doctor asked the usual questions...smoke, drink...etcetera.

I said I smoked a cigar or pipe at times when I was out for a walk. Doctor said that was the problem, ordered me to stop and we moved on.

Several years later the pain returned. Went to a hospital, doctor asked the questions, decided it was because I enjoy spicy foods.

Ok...cut back and shortly the pain was back. IIRC this time it was because I needed to lose weight (5'10" 190 pounds, they wanted me at 160 which made me feel "light").

So I lost weight. Next round was excersize. I started walking more and got an excer-bike.

Pain returns. Now during all this time I kept saying I thought it was some sort of GI problem or something other than Heart/arteries/lungs.

No matter I'm NOT the doc.

There were several other incidents which I won't go into other than getting a complete going over last August and being told I was healthy as a horse...an old horse...get used to age.

Then this past weekend I was watching Deadliest Catch and over the course of an hour Memorial Day afternoon the pain returned with a VENGANCE! Wife took me back to the hospital. The pain was BAD! So much so that the first thing they wanted to do was give me morphine which I refused until I was doubled over on the floor and Wife gave them the OK.

Never had it before and I ended up loopier than usual for 2 days. Mouthed John Prine songs and "O Death" to anyone who dared come near.

The pain was so bad some of the nurses, God bless 'em, were worried that I would go "postal", but they still took great care of me.

This time I got a GREAT Heart MD. After all the usual tests - which I had been through several times before - he realized my heart, arteries and lungs were COMPLETELY CLEAR despite my smoking, eating artery clogging foods and indulging in Brews.

Wife was disappointed that my diet didn't cause high blood pressure, High Chloresterol or clogged arteries.Wednesday they came to me with the diagnosis...that EVERY OTHER FREAKING DOC HAD MISSED FOR 30 years!

Years ago I had an infection...possibly typhus....and I contracted a chronic case of pericarditis, inflamation of the sac containing my heart.

Symptoms the same as heart attack but usually no sweating. Usually self limiting but in some rare cases it can induce a heart attack or other life threatening problems.

They immediately started treatment and within a few hours I was basically fine! They discharged me with limitations for a day and after that no limitations other than taking the laundry list of meds and follow-up examinations in a few weeks.

So (and getting to the point of this thread) why didn't ANY of the previous docs diagnose me correctly? It's my belief they were good docs but tainted by PC...smoking, diet, etcetera. They disregarded the test results in favor of what the "evil" was at the time.

And my family wonders why I don't trust hospitals.
