The Thinker: Barack Obama explains his job
Wall Street Journal ^ | 5/28/2010 | James Taranto

Posted on 05/31/2010 1:18:18 AM PDT by mojito

What exactly is the job of the president of the United States? Let's ask the man who currently holds that position, Barack Obama:

"My job right now is just to make sure that everybody in the Gulf understands this is what I wake up to in the morning and this is what I go to bed at night thinking about: the spill."

Obama's job description is fascinating. He has been depicted as a proponent of "activist government," but this may be a bum rap. Now he tells us he thinks that if he somehow gets people to think about him and how much he's thinking about what he thinks they think he should be thinking about, his job is done.

Which raises only two questions: First, if the requirements of his job are so modest, why is he still having trouble meeting them? Second, couldn't all this cogitation be done at a cost of less than $3.5 trillion a year?

LOL Easy on the poor lad. The only real job he's had before was scooping ice cream one summer.

LOL. Taranto at his finest. I lost a lot of respect for him last year for denigrating those who want Obama to provide basic background documents, but this is absolutely classic!

I use the term “Legislating Innovation”.

Let's use CAFE standards for an example. Congress and the Poseur, and even President Bush for that matter, come up with a magic number of MPG that cars and trucks should be able to attain.

Are any of these people Engineers, and I don't mean the Choo Choo type? They come up with 35.5 MPG, like that is a threshold that will save the country from our evil Oil addiction. It does nothing of the sort, but you wouldn't know it with the poor excuse for a Press we have today.

If the Politicians are so sure that we can attain their lofty expectations, why not make the CAFE Standard 50 MPG, or 100 MPG or even 1000 MPG?

After all, the skies the limit when it comes to convincing the ignorant constituents of your good intentions. Of course, when Obama proclaims “just plug the hole”, he and his sycophant followers think that will change the situation.

I am reminded of Pharaoh Ramses in the movie The Ten Commandments, “so it is written, so it is done”.

God help us if November turns into a positive reinforcement exercise for the Democrats instead of their Waterloo.

In other words, his job is PR--public relations. Talking, BS-ing, "getting the message out," spinning, creating an image. Why didn't he just say, "My job is to wake up in the morning and go to bed at night, thinking about the spill." But he said his job is to make sure we KNOW that's what he's doing.

He's a poser. Nothing else.

"My job right now is just to make sure that everybody in the Gulf understands this is what I wake up to in the morning and this is what I go to bed at night thinking about: the spill."

"But there's been enough of me thinking about me. Why don't YOU think about me for a while?"

Poseur. Narcissist. Dissembler.

More of the self-centered vapid arrogance that academicians and elitsts love to grovel to.

Next step: require a GPS-driven readout in every home and workplace so that Americans will know, at any time, which way to turn so they can bow towards Dear Leader.

Unfortunately the Republican party has not learned the importance of PR in shaping public opinion. The Democrat spin machine used Katrina to effectively end the Bush presidency. Republicans are daily being handed huge opportunities to highlight the ineptness of the current leader and seem unable to go on the offensive. Obama is right about one thing, having a message matters, particularly when the other side is silent.

I think you are forgetting that the left is in control of the main propaganda organs.

True the left is in charge of the mainstream media. However, the alternative media outlets — talk radio, the internet, and even Fox News continue to grow dramatically as sources of information while the mainstream press shrinks in size and importance. There are vehicles for the Republicans to communicate a coherent message to millions of people. My issue is with the absence of an effort to communicate an alternative point of view while the other side continues to spin away using the media outlets at its disposal.

We are in a war of ideas and core beliefs. It is the unproductive class versus the productive class, the embracers of the nanny state versus the believers in individual liberty and personal accountability, the barbarians against the civilized. The Founders of this nation fought and defeated the greatest empire in the world, communicating through pamphlets and letters. The message matters no matter how it is communicated and how few it may reach. I am appalled at the inability of the Republican Party to formulate and articulate a clear alternative to the tyrannical state.
