Turkey has been marketing its short-range air defense system to Arab League states. Turkey's military-owned Aselsan has been briefing Arab militaries on the company's Pedestal-Mounted Air Defense System (PMADS). The system, based on the U.S.-origin Stinger surface-to-air missile, was designed for very short-range air defense, particularly the protection of critical sites and military bases.

"There is interest [in the system] within the region," an executive said.

Aselsan displayed PMADS at Sofex-2010, which took place in Amman, Jordan on May 10-13. Executives said Jordan's military has been examining the feasibility of procuring the system, which could also fire French- and Russian-origin SAMs.

Under the Islamist government of Prime Minister Recep Erdogan, Turkey has sought to increase defense exports to Arab militaries. Industry sources said Gulf Cooperation Council and North African states have placed orders for armored vehicles and other platforms from Turkish contractors.

Aselsan has not cited any foreign orders for the air defense system. PMADS has been deployed by the Turkish military.

PMADS, capable of firing while in motion, was designed to fit wheeled and tracked vehicles as well as patrol boats. Configurations have included Zipkin for light vehicles, Atilgan for heavy vehicles and a battery that fires the Russian-origin SA-18 Igla short-range surface-to-air missile.

The battery, with an option to include a 12.7mm gun, could be fired up to 50 meters from the vehicle platform as part of a remote-control configuration. PMADS is operated by a fire control system that contains a thermal camera, CCD and laser range-finder.

On May 12, Aselsan signed an agreement to establish a joint venture in Jordan. The Turkish company agreed to form the venture with KADDB Investment Group, a subsidiary of the state-owned King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau.

Turkey is becoming More Radically Islamic as the months go by so our government had better take that into consideration.

Fortunately, Islamic regimes have a perfect record of peaceful co-existence and non-aggression.

Oh, and impeccable hygiene.

If you have any information that suggests this technology is based on information provided to Turkey by the USA, please post it here.

The systems will be integrated onto German-made Fennek vehicles, manufactured by Munich-based Krauss Maffei Wegmann

Aselsan had teamed up with Raytheon Missile Systems, the original designer and developer of Stinger missiles, …
