If Travolta had ridden on Amtrak, his dogs would still be alive.

I was drunk the day my Mom got out of prison
I went to pick her up in the rain
But before I could get to the station in my pickup truck
She got runned over by the doggone train.

(No, I'm not equating dogs to Momma)

I like Travolta. The scientology thing aside, he’s done a number of good movies, he mostly keeps his opinions to himself, and he’s really suffered a number of major losses in his life. I wish him well.

Ditto.

I drove from South Fl to Door County, WI for Xmas in order to have the dog with us. I wouldn’t fly a dog. I think when you see how luggage is handled, and realize that they my fly one animal for every 50,000 pieces of luggage, you know they are not going to be able to be attentive.

There’s a subset of people here that have the view that when people lose a loved pet there should not be any kind of talking about it as losing a person. They are the kind that complain about posters who post animal abuse cases and say ‘focus on the people abuse stories instead’. Like we cannot do both. Like it devalues peoples’ problems by focusing on animals. Both are examples of the same flawed human condition. But express any sympathy for animals or those that have lost them, and we’re somehow taking finite sympathy resources away from people.

...dogs can be trained to listen.

Can’t say the same for husbands

No, you stop projecting. All I did was ask a question.
If you disagree, fine. It was just a question.

They may have been the only survivors.

Only an obtuse reading of the article could give that impression.

I disagree. The story is about the dogs. How, exactly, is the son's death relevant to that story?

Your last sentence is not true. In many ways it is similar. It is not identical. It is similar in many ways. Animals are perpetual children. They never leave the house and start a life of their own. They depend 100% on us for their care and love and safety. They do not go anywhere without us. Some remain the size of small children their entire lives, even when fully grown or old. Many enjoy being held and walked with. They express love back to their owners in a variety of ways. They are fed, given toys, houses, their own areas, medical care, food, water, comfort, love, friendship. Welcomed as part of the family. Wanted.

It is not identical. In many ways it is similar.

“So CBS is equating the death of their child with their loss of a couple of dogs?”

If the reporter had not mentioned that the Travolta’s lost their son last year, then I guarantee you that some people would be complaining how insensitive the reporter is, to write about the death of the two dogs, yet fail to mention the far greater tragedy of the death of their son a year ago.

This story lacks specifics. Were the dogs in a carrier? Werre they running loose on the tarmac? If they were loose a simple leash could have prevented this.

This is not true? The tragedy of losing a child is not in anyway equal to losing a pet.

If you equate losing a child to a pet.....there is nothing left to be said, you have said it all.

Our dear friends just lost their precious dog. They didn't have children, just the dog that went everywhere with them like a child. Neither of them can speak about their recent loss without crying. It's still tearing them up.

It's obvious Travolta's dogs weren't plain ole yard dogs. They have a little girl who must be grieving right now. I'm so sorry for them.

The reporter doesn’t report that part. I’m guessing they were on the tarmac in crates. Seems unlikely both would be killed if they were loose.

owns a home in Isblesboro, a small coastal town in Maine.

In case anyone is wondering, the name is "Islesboro" and it's an island in the Penobscot Bay, in Maine.

When our dog was hit by a car in January, I cried for three days. The hardest part was telling my children. Especially my 10 year whose dog it was. He said that night, “Nothing’s funny without Moses.” When our new dog showed up, the children said Moses’ ghost must have led her there.
