LOS ANGELES The overwhelming majority of Americans think that the countrys immigration policies need to be seriously overhauled. And despite protests against Arizonas stringent new immigration enforcement law, a slim majority of Americans support it, even though they say it may lead to racial profiling.
These are the findings of the latest New York Times/CBS News poll.
The public broadly agrees, across party lines, that the United States could be doing more along its border to keep illegal immigrants out: 78 percent of respondents.
That unity, however, fractures on the question of what to do with illegal immigrants already here and the role of states in enforcing immigration law, normally a federal responsibility.
A majority of Americans, 57 percent, say the federal government should determine laws addressing illegal immigration. But 51 percent said the Arizona law is about right in tackling the problem, though 36 percent said it goes too far and 9 percent said it didnt go far enough in tackling the problem.
The law has recharged the national debate over securing the border and what to do about the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants already in the country.

those unintended consequences get ya every time...
Yep build a fence.
... because most think the current law allows so many to pour through and take over our country.
Illegals are criminals, period. They are not 'yearning to be free'; they are 'yearning for a free ride'. They are a pox on our entire sociological, medical and financial system.
and get a catapult, and a moat, and some crocs...
The left is suggesting nothing has changed between the (generally) law abiding and (mostly legal) million or so of our latino brothers here ten years ago vs. the drug crazed, beheading, murdering bastrds among the 20-30 million that are here now. Im old enough to remember when things were really better, even though it was wrong, and smart enough to know when I am being called a racist.
And I am REALLY sick of this crap.
“And despite protests against Arizonas stringent new immigration enforcement law, a slim majority of Americans support it,”
Must be govment skool liberal math when 2/3 is a “slim majority”.
Classic NY Slimes liberal puke garbage. Thank you for coloring my day.
Today's winner.
I have known a few Mexicans who were working here, most wanted to take the case they made and move back to Mexico. Seems they can't quite figure out why the commies running Mexico want everybody poor.
“The public broadly agrees, across party lines, that the United States could be doing more along its border to keep illegal immigrants out: 78 percent of respondents.”
That agrees with every poll, even minorities. The NYTimes (partly owned by the richest man in the world, Carlos Slim-Mexican) couldn’t even twist this to their favor. But they sure tried, didn’t they?

“And despite protests against Arizonas stringent new immigration enforcement law, a slim majority of Americans support it, even though they say it may lead to racial profiling.”
Utter hogwash. But it’s from the N.Y. times which is hopefully going out of business soon unless zerobozo bails them out too.
Arizona’s laws are not stringent. They are based on the federal law which is not enforced, due to our liberal scumbags. And I doubt very much that the supporters are a minority.
Racial profiling? No way. It’s not a racial thing. I would love to hear a liberal describe how an illegal alien looks.
Then nail him with the same crap. He’s a racist.
51% are OK with the Arizona law, PLUS 9% think it doesn't go far enough = 60% in favor.
60% is not a "slim majority"!
Barf alert needed on this article.
Oh the NYT and their word games.
“I don’t know if the writer actually read the poll results, but 60% support the Arizona law (51% think it’s just right with 9% thinking it doesn’t go far enough) “
Bears repeating.
Those ACLU member polls are so accurate, NYT.
