Riot police shield Obama from tea-party grandmas
World Net Daily ^ | April 29, 2010 | Chelsea Schilling

When hundreds of tea-party protesters – including many elderly women – gathered outside a civic center where President Obama was giving a public speech Wednesday, they were surprised to be greeted by police dispatched in full riot gear.

Obama spoke in Quincy, Ill., at the Oakley Lindsay Civic Center. The event was open to the public, and about 2,000 tickets were distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis.

About 200 protesters peacefully rallied outside the civic center, carrying signs that read "Give Us Liberty Not Debt" and yellow "Don't Tread On Me" flags, the Quincy Herald-Whig reported. Protesters waved U.S. flags and shouted "Remember in November" and "You work for us."

'Look at these extremist maniacs!'

After Obama's motorcade arrived, a Secret Service agent instructed protesters to move across the street. The crowd began singing "God Bless, America" and the National Anthem. Quincy Deputy Police Chief Ron Dreyer ordered police in full riot gear to march up the street and stand between the tea partiers and the civic center.

Snipers were also spotted on the rooftop of the building.

The tea partiers complied when they were told to move across the street, behind a sidewalk and into a parking lot. The riot police did not come into contact with the crowd, and the tea partiers sang patriotic songs while obeying the orders.

The cost of keeping a target like the Obama's safe from deranged persons, is astronomical, far more than lessor targets not to mention how much it costs him to fly Air Force 1 with its presidential entourage around the country....that little jaunt with the Obama's walking some of the Appalachian Trail probably could have housed and fed several dozen needy families.......

Bravo for these senior citizens who understand what America is all about!

I agree. They did exactly the right thing, including bringing the video cameras to document it all. Especially chilling were the snipers on the rooftops. It’s my belief they’re trying to incite some violence—and the fine elderly citizens at that event made perfect fools of whoever sent in the SWAT team.

I went to a GWB re-election rally in Denver.

Even there, there was a presence of SS, SWAT and a lot of snipers on rooftops.

This looks more like SOP than anything else.

America, 2010. Who would have guessed this back in, say, 1988?

The Tea Party grandmas next time need to make some sandwiches, buy some chips, make up some ice cold lemonade, and bake some chocolate chip cookies and give them to the boys in black.

Um, there are sniper teams on the rooftops at ANY Presidential appearance. When GW Bush spoke at the spring 2002 graduation for Ohio State, you could see the sniper teams on some of the high points of the stadium.

In fact, I saw someone up there and pointed my camcorder in that direction out of curiosity (my camcorder has a great zoom). Didn’t know who or what it was, but suspected a sheriff or State HP. Well, it was quickly clear that was a sniper team. Within a second, the spotter was looking right back at me through his binocs. Of course, I rather quickly pointed my camcorder in another direction...

re: This looks more like SOP than anything else

Good observation. If I intended Obama harm I would certainly consider using as cover the most innocuous group I could find. What better than a bunch of grandmas?

I truly can't imagine being responsible for the safety of that man. I pray for his safety. Not only would something bad happening to him give us Biden as President, it would set Obmam up as a martyr. Neither outcome would be good for us as a country.

We can certainly outlast Obama. America didn't get where she is by being unable to rise to occasion when needed!

Just out of curiosity, how close were the tea partiers to the President’s location? If they were quite close, I can see how this might be an issue. If not, it looks like overkill.

Close enough — “outside” the Obama event — that sniper teams there to cover the President would definitely also be within sight range of the TEA Party.

True. I saw GWB in Wheaton, IL in 2000 before the election. Lots of snipers there too.

I wonder what would happen if someone tried to stick an American flag in the barrel of one of their rifles.

I’m sure that fool would be obama.

“This looks more like SOP than anything else”

Yeahhhh BUT, the Secret Service has gone overboard. They have milked the JFK assination for all it is worth to justify ANYTHING. They are often crossing the line between legitimate protection, and are now merely stage managing.

If you show up at an obama rally, wearing a T-shirt with the Obama joker clown face, you won’t be allowed in. They assist in creating photo-friendly events, and do not allow any anti-candidate message to be expressed, even on a t-shirt. It goes way beyond safety.

The truth is, they didn’t like the message and the grannies were nowhere near him .

So,, all Amerians lose the right to peaceably assemble withing sniper range of a president?? That’s currently about a mile. It doesn’t work like that. Thats why such a rally could be held withing shouting distance of the white house.

Um, you are misconstruing might point. They of course have the right to peacably assemble. Sending in the SWAT team was stupid, heavy-handed, and just plain wrong. And incidentally a real PR screw-up for Obozo.

All I am saying is that if you get anywhere near an event where the President is present, don't be too shocked to catch sight of sniper teams in the area. (Some are probably supposed to be easily seen as a deterrent to less psycho nutjobs, with others not so easily seen.) It's just SOP for the Secret Service, and frankly legitimate IMHO. In other words, I was just commenting that the presence of the sniper teams on rooftops almost certainly had NOTHING to do with the TEA Partiers.
