Happy Meal toys could be banned in Santa Clara County

The latest target in the battle over fast food is something you shouldn't even put in your mouth.

Convinced that Happy Meals and other food promotions aimed at children could make kids fat as well as happy, county officials in Silicon Valley are poised to outlaw the little toys that often come with high-calorie offerings.

The proposed ban is the latest in a growing string of efforts to change the types of foods aimed at youngsters and the way they are cooked and sold. Across the nation, cities, states and school boards have taken aim at excessive sugar, salt and certain types of fats.

Believed to be the first of its kind in the nation, the proposal would forbid the inclusion of a toy in any restaurant meal that has more than 485 calories, more than 600 mg of salt or high amounts of sugar or fat. In the case of McDonald's, the limits would include all of the chain's Happy Meals — even those that include apple sticks instead of French fries.

Parents should control the kids and McDonalds. The Santa Clara County government is using what Levin calls soft tyranny, and this Yeager bozo, a Totalitarian minded thug, is using this in particular.

Ok, so apple slices, low fat milk and a small burger is now bad?

My nephews don’t get to eat at McDonald’s any more because it’s so disgusting, but their parents will buy the happy meal toy for them. They are pretty inexpensive.

Why should the Parents be responsible when the Government can come in and do it for them, for a small fee in taxes of course.

From what I can see this Thug Yeager was a Obama delegate to the Rat convention in 2008. Am I surprised? No.

Rewarding kids to eat thier mechanically seperated chicken McNuggets, reconstitued with GMO corn, all with the a promise of lead contaminated toy (future landfill) made in China whose profits will go towards buying missles to destroy us, hmmmm, now there’s an idea.

I think obesity in the young has more to do with constant between meal snacking and lack of exercise than eating fast food. I ate lots of fast food as a kid but we didn’t constantly snack and spent most every non-school hour outside playing and body weight was not an issue at all. I’m not advocating a “fast food” diet, but let’s look at the big picture here.

But what about the cute, catchy name, Happy Meal? That migh entice kids to want one. BAN THE NAME HAPPY MEAL!

What about the pretty box it comes in, with all the pictures and puzzles on it? That might attract kids, too. BAN THE BOXES!

What about those little “playlands” that make the kids say “pllllleeeeeaassee can we go to the playland?” BAN THE PLAYLANDS!

What about the bright shiny golden arches on the building that kids recognize as a place they like to eat? BAN THE ARCHES!

It’s not the food that they’re going after,

it’s the parents’ right to decide that they’re after.

You have an EXCELLENT point. Perhaps the Supervisor Yeager is annoyed at the time the kids spend with the toys, and not singing songs of praise for our Imperious Leader. Eat and get fat, but always be ready with a song in your heart for THE ONE (cue heavenly trumpets, and singing children)

Shhh - Don’t give them any ideas. Obama and his special police force will get to work on an implementation plan... Arrests and re-education camps forthcoming (I am in a snarky mood today)

I use to know one of the Santa Clara Supervisors. Unfortunately his term ran out last year. He may have been from Boston, but had served as the mayor of Milpitas locally several times before becoming a supervisor. I suspect he would have tried to put a stop to this nonsense. He didn’t seem to like government interventions into peoples private lives. (Even though he’s likely a registered democrat - he comes by it naturally being from Boston...)

This just goes along with the Bay area’s tendency toward liking the Nanny state approach to government. I also had the displeasure of dealing with Santa Clara County bureaucrats who were considering a tower ordinance that would have affected ham radio operators in county territory. They operate under the mis-apprehension that if they don’t allow it in their regulations - you can’t do it. So if they didn’t have a regulation allowing you to put up a tower - you can’t! If you wanted to get a new toilet in Santa Clara County - you needed a building permit!

Their ONLY redeeming value is that they are infinitely better than their next door neighbor - Santa Cruz county. After the Loma Preita quake in 89 - Santa Cruz took up to five years to give permission for people to rebuild their houses! Oh - and the building permit could cost you $25K!

The Bay Area is so much fun to live in... if this wasn’t the center of the Electronics industry (my source of employment...I would move immediately.)
