Sarah Palin, former Alaska governor, talks with the press outside of the Federal Court House in downtown Knoxville Friday.

KNOXVILLE - With the government wrapping up its case, the defense attorney for a former University of Tennessee student accused of illegally accessing one-time Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's private e-mail account tried and failed to put another college student in the hot seat.

Attorney Wade Davies this afternoon sought to convince U.S. District Judge Thomas Phillips to allow him to force a reluctant Justin Hill to testify as a defense witness.

Hill is a Utah college student who was one of 10 other people across the nation who used a password allegedly created and posted on a web site to tap into Palin's account, Davies said.

Hill asserted his right against self-incrimination. Phillips declined to grant the defense's request.

The prosecution rested its case today, the highlight of which featured Palin herself.

Testifying before a packed audience, she appeared at ease and smiled throughout most of her time on the stand, particularly when she was shown various family photographs that had been illegally obtained from her private Yahoo! e-mail account.

he quarreled a bit with the former governor when he said the answer to her Yahoo! security question - Where she met her husband - was no great secret.

Does not matter. Defense attorney trying to place blame on the victim. A better hint or a very detailed answer would have been more secure, but the fault of having an email hacked lies on the perpetrator, not the victim.

Same goes for idiots that say that people that were victims of identity theft are at fault because they didn't protect their identity.

Victims of auto theft are at fault because they left their keys in the car.

Defense attorney may as well be asking a rape victim if wearing revealing clothes allowed the perp to rape them.

I would give the young man a choice:

He could serve four years in prison, which is filled with a lot more Democrats than Republicans...

Or, he could serve four years with the US Marines in Afghanistan, which is filled with a lot more Republicans than Democrats.

His lawyers appear to be a bunch of incompetent idiots. His best bet would have been a plea deal. He’s toast, unless Precedent Oblahblah pardons him. His wise-ass comment about Bristol being “not his type” certainly didn’t help him either.

"he could serve four years with the US Marines"

The punks lawyer says it was just a "prank". It's not like I want the little bastard hung*. But a felony conviction on his record and at least a couple of years in prison (not a country club prison) would be fine with me.

(On second thought maybe they could hang him just a little.)

He bragged about his feat

Yep. I don't think there will be much confusion about his intentions.

What did the Marines ever do to deserve that?

Finally found it buried....Prosecutors say Kernell, the son of Memphis Democratic lawmaker Mike Kernell, was politically motivated to see if Palin, who became the GOP vice presidential candidate in the summer of 2008, was using the Yahoo! account for state government business, outside of the public eye.

Bristol not his type, huh. Maybe his type is a 2fer.

People are hanged; meat is hung. He’d have to be hanged before he could be hung.

The defense , however, argues Kernell never personally harassed the family and only snooped through the Palin e-mail account as part of a harmless prank. And yet this ahole frightens her by saying that several boys were outside her door and to let them in. How is that not harassment? I hope that he is muted the correct justice.

[His best bet would have been a plea deal.]

He wants the publicity of a trial and so do his lawyers.

Have not heard about 4 years punishment.

Heard possible 50 years on TV. Was that a verbal error?
