They should have just slowed airspeed, dropped altitude, had all other passengers buckle and let him open the door.

It would have slid closed again after he exited the vehicle and they could have made up any lost time pretty quickly.

Stanley Dwayne Sheffield

He does have "Wayne" in his middle name, so he's automatically certifiable.

Whew! Good thing they ruled out ties to terrorism before an investigation got under way, or else this could have gotten ugly.

FBI Supervisory Special Agent Darrin Jones said authorities do not believe the incident was related to terrorism.
Nope, nothing to see here, keep moving.

Good luck trying to open a pressurized aircraft’s door at altitude.

Crew members and passengers on Delta flight 2148 to Tampa subdued Stanley Dwayne Sheffield, 46

Is that middle name D'Wayne?

Can the doors of an airplane really be opened while the plane is in the air? I would hope that they were locked and it would at least take an act of the pilot to unlock them.

I’d hate to think any idiot could get up and jokingly pull the handle and open the doors.

Probably just a misguided fan of The White Stripes.

I have a theory about some of these nutcases that do crazy things on aircraft. I believe that it may be related to the decreased pressure and low oxygen content of the passenger cabin air. In her book “Flying Blind, Flying Safe” Mary Schiavo mentioned the fact that the amount of fresh air input into the aircraft is controlled either by the pilot of the airline owner, and it has an effect on fuel efficiency. She also said that some airlines deliberately kept the amount of fresh air low. I have absolutely no evidence that insufficient oxygen would cause the nutty behavior.

Managed to break a zip tie and a leather belt? Perhaps excessive use of PCP.

Anyone who gets out of line and makes threats of any kind on an aircraft is a terrorist. Somehow, TSA, the administration, the terrorist apoligists, Janet "FewerBrainCellsThanAGoldfish" Napolitano, and lefties everywere don't realize that: By not calling it for what it is, terrorism, your encouraging more of it.

Just get down below 10K feet, reduce speed and help him out the door at that time...

Button back up and proceed to your original destination...

No muss no fuss...
