Amazing New Eruption Pics!

We took a ride...

18.4.2010

Words by Haukur S Magnússon

Grapevine's dedicated team of eruption enthusiasts just returned from a
lengthy sojourn down to the explosive area down south. Some high-level
connections enabled them to travel closer to the action than most - and
they shot many, many photos.

We will be posting more visual documentation (hopefully some video, too), as well as a story of the trip later today, but for now you should feast on these awesome pics by Grapevine staff photographer Julia Staples.

"The ash cloud looms"

"This just looks really weird and crazy right there"

"Super-scientific volcano measuring doodads"

"Icebergs left behind the jökulhlaup ("glacier run")"

"More of that. It looks really cool, huh?"

"Seljalandsfoss, crazy ash cloud in the background"

"Nice looking farmhouses - crazy ash cloud in the background"

"Horses being herded away from that crazy cloud"

"You would run too. Unless maybe you were a photographer"

"Wow. Just, wow."

"Uploading this, we're listening to FOX news report on the eruption. "There will be many business meetings, school plays and important appointments missed," they say. God, FOX is so awesome. If anyone from FOX is reading this, please give yourself a hi-five."

"Holy Earth."

"If you are going to be hanging out in the ash cloud, you are pretty much guaranteed to look like a crazy space alien"

"Volcanic sunset"

"There are apparently no ghost pirates in this fog. Hopefully."

"Apparently, you had to be there"

"Probably a lot of tiny cities made of ashes on that road"

"This is (was?) Iceland's most fertile farmland"

"Rather post-apocalyptic, huh?"

"The volcano spews forth"

---

Many more photos to come. And stories of the trip. We are at a loss for words right now.

Good night.

Found this group of pics at mbl.is that has lots of links to various Icelandic reports and descriptions.

The awesome power of Nature, and the futility of Man's Plans to control it!

By the way - should anyone have the contacts, pass this along:

Great photos. Hope you were wearing a mask. That stuff supposedly really messes with the lungs.

Wish I were there, but the mask is mandatory in that cloud.

Poor Iceland, poor horses. I hope they have shelter for the horses and livestock.

Unless you are Al Gore who can’t control it either.

Obama should have not have mocked God....with his where is Arnageddon comment

President Barack Obama. “Leaders of the Republican Party ... called the passage of (the health care reform bill) ‘Armageddon.’ Armageddon! ‘End of freedom as we know it.’ So after I signed the bill, I looked around to see if there were any asteroids falling or some cracks opening up in the earth. Turned out it was a nice day. Birds were chirping. Folks were strolling down the Mall.”

"This is (was?) Iceland's most fertile farmland"

And now you know why. Rich nutrients belched up from the earth. Give it two years and it will be back to very fertile farmland.

Compare those pictures with this photo of a dust storm about to hit Stratford, Texas, in April, 1935:

True. But meanwhile the livestock dies off and the people vacate, taking their skills with them. Not good for the continuation of their society.

... I looked around to see if there were any asteroids falling or some cracks opening up in the earth.

Seems we've had both in the last week. WIsconsin and Iceland may not be close enough to DC for his definition of Armageddon, however.

Obama should have not have mocked God.

He can't help it -- he can only mock himself!
