Battle looms over Obama nominee to 9th District Court
Sacramento Bee ^ | 4/9/10 | Rob Hotakainen

WASHINGTON – Goodwin Liu couldn't speak English until kindergarten, but he went on to become co-valedictorian at Rio Americano High School in Sacramento, a Rhodes Scholar and a law professor at the University of California, Berkeley.

Now he's under attack on Capitol Hill, where Republicans oppose his nomination to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco.

Liu, the son of Taiwanese immigrants, is attracting far more attention than most judicial nominees. While his backers are excited by his solidly liberal credentials, some opponents fear Obama is preparing Liu for what would be a historic appointment: the first Asian American on the U.S. Supreme Court.

You forgot the MEGA-BARFER alert. The author forgot to add that Liu has published position papers on his belief that SCJs have not only the right but the obligation to change the law as they see fit. The author also forgot to mention that Liu has never, ever set foot in a courtroom.

39 years old. He’d be on the court for eternity. This is how ‘rats do it. Has a Republican president (just asking) who wasn’t a RINO ever nominated a 39 year old judge to the SC?

Yes, everyone hates him because he's asian. Ever notice when libs talk about minorities, education and prosperity that asians are conveniently ignored?

But, let said asian be a raving liberal loon and he's suddenly remembered.

---------- I don't know why that went through messed up. My keys have been messed up lately; brand new laptop.... I seem illiterate; skipping letters/punctuation/spaces etc.

Just as an aside... Zero may get the opportunity to nominate a second justice before the end of his first term. Will he be the first president to nominate someone who doesn’t even speak English?!!! I wouldn’t put it past him. Wouldn’t put it past libs to come up with the idea. I can hear the arguments in favor of it now.

Asians are ignored in because they don’t fit the standard “minority as victim” vision of the left.

Blacks may be turned down for mortgages at higher rates than whites, and that’s due to discrimination,

but we damn well won’t discuss that “whites” get turned down for mortgages at higher rates than Asians.

I’m very surprised that he’s liberal.
Like someone said yesterday - there’s no sweat on a liberal’s wealth.

Someone who works hard to achieve what they do
isn’t likely to be a liberal.

Yes, everyone hates him because he’s asian.

If it's an Asian and very qualified judge you want, I nominate Viet Dinh

The Sukbee is already creating the framework for the perception that those who oppose Liu are racist.

Liu has advocated many liberal causes, supporting national health care, affirmative action, gay marriage and slavery reparations. He angered conservatives by testifying against Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito. He has alarmed opponents by arguing that the Constitution should be interpreted based on "the evolving norms and traditions of our society,"

Don't worry, it will be years before labor camps are built for conservatives.

They've even invented a clever acronym, NAM or Non-Asian Minorities.

No. The 3 youngest Justices ever confirmed under GOP Presidents were Clarence Thomas under GHW Bush (43), Potter Stewart under Eisenhower (43) and John Marshall Harlan, Sr. under Rutherford Hayes (44) (with Thomas being the youngest GOP Justice ever).
