Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich exhorted an audience of Republican faithful to stop President Barack Obama's "secular socialist machine" by winning the fall congressional elections and ultimately repealing the Democrats' centerpiece health care legislation.
Gingrich spoke Thursday on the opening night of the Southern Republican Leadership Conference at the Hilton Riverside in New Orleans. A one-time history professor with a doctorate degree from Tulane, Gingrich rejected any claim to bipartisanship, calling the country's political split the most serious conflict since the years leading up to the Civil War.
"The most radical president in American history has now thrown down the gauntlet -- 'I run a machine, I run Washington and there's nothing you can do,'" Gingrich said of Obama.
The conference, which takes place every four years and draws donors and activists from across the South, is the party's first major gathering since Obama signed health care reform into law without a single Republican vote.
Some of the party's biggest names, including former vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, embattled party Chairman Michael Steele and local conservative favorite Gov. Bobby Jindal, are scheduled to speak during the conference's remaining three days.

Pelican State ping
Gingrich is no leader of mine.
Gingrich makes a good flag though.
I didn’t stay to hear Newt, but J.C. Watts gave the best speech of his life. It was wonderful, and something that we as conservatives should hear everyday!
Can be made into?
:>)
hmmm....
flapping, sometimes points you the right way
Just can’t get the green couch out of my mind.
You know who would be a fantastic VP choice for Palin?
Gingrich!
Liberals heads will explode. He knows the Congressional machinery inside and out. He’s the ultimate attack dog. He’ll chew up Biden in the debate and spit him out. And he is qualified to be President and might just be a great one if he has to serve . . .
Like Sharpton, Pelosi & Obama?
At least Gingrich is a conservative who is articulent, coherent, and experienced with the workings of government. He’ll always have that going for him
Love the Newt. Would work, contribute and vote for him.
Maybe not electable, though. Thought to be TOO Conservative by those on the Left, and of course, his Global Warming gaff and marital problems make him persona non grata here.
Gingrich has been too willing to get along with Leftists ever since Clinton played him in 1995 by shutting the government down. And that was multiplied when Clinton was impeached and Newt didn’t speak out — because he had a “Monica” type problem of his own.
Newt is articulate and informed when he talks principles and history. Otherwise, he is untrustworthy - and he ought NEVER to “lead” officially again. Period.
For what? Sandbagging the levies so the city don't flood when the waters rise due to global warming?
Oh really... did he fire up his democrat base?
LLS
LLS
The House democrats, backed by the msm, demonized him to the point he resigned. This all was possible because of the lack of support and loyalty by spineless Republicans.
The democrats win because they have total loyalty and more spine.
he’s damaged goods and he’s a warmer
I didnt stay to hear Newt, but J.C. Watts gave the best speech of his lifeGAG!
Of his life or FOR his (political) life? Both are political frauds.
Newt does a public global warming stand with Pelosi and JC Watts was supporting/talking up Obama almost as a regular on Hannity's radio show.
